O.K. I think this bird is finished, but I may need to darken an area underneath the branch at the higher point of the tail to add a little more contrast and shadow...will decide tomorrow, my eyes are gone for today...cheers. Ian

Hi all. Fixed the tail (added some darker shadow to push it back under the perch and take away the flat appearance), and began second birds head. Cheers. Ian...and thanks for all the encouragement too folks. Really appreciated.

Ian, how long does one of these drawings take you?

Hi Texdot...It really depends on a lot of things (but mainly the amount of different colours involved). Ilayer the colour one on top of the other starting at the lightest and then working towards the darkest...so this giraffe took about 25hrs if I remember right. But if you look carefully, the darker markings on the neck have about six layers of colour on then, which means I worked these areas six times over...

These Macaws took 33hrs, but again, loads of colour, AND the branching took a while (so background when done in this amount of detail takes just as long per square inch as the actual birds)...

The WF amazons took about the same...

Graphite dogs heads take between 8 and 15 hours normally.

Head and shoulder done. Will move onto secondaries and primaries on the right hand side of this bird, this evening. I recon I am about half way finished now, so starting to think about my next possible. I may for a change do a head and shoulder portraite of a parrot, rather than a full scene. What do you think?

Anyway, primaries done. Nearly there. Finish this bird tonight or tomorrow night I hope. I will then pull my hair out (what little I have) while I make the final decision on the foliage. I still like the idea of the fig tree though. I have photographed an African species, so I imagine it is in the right context... anyway...here you go...

By the way, I am still hoping someone out there has a male Grand Eclectus for me to photograph...please...so I can get on with that species. Until then, I think it may be Galah or BandG macaw next. Cheers. Ian

I am not going to lie, I am a little envious of your talent, I can barely draw stick figures ...

Hi all...so sorry not posted update in a couple of days. I have done some of the background (decided on a lovely Tamarind tree in flower), put about three hours in so far, then PUT MY SHOULDER OUT! In fact, it is painful to type (a collective arrrrrrrrr my help). Will get back to it as soon as I am fit. Sorry. Ian

hopefully you have a great story as to how you put your shoulder out (tackled a defender to steal the ball, and scored the game winning goal in a recent soccer match ... or something like that!) hopefully you will be feeling well again soon ... take care!

Wow, that is fantastic! You should offer your services to other bird owners. I can imagine a lot of people would love to have their baby in a picture like that.
We knew a lady who would paint portraits of a person's bird professionally, and I must say that I prefer your work to hers. You are very talented.
