dear all

today i gave momo a slice of ginger and she took it well rather she forgot everything else and went for a bigger chunk which was at the top of cage.

i read couple of places where they were telling about the benefits of ginger

Ginger
is an absolute favorite taste of parrots. It is an excellent herb for the respiratory system as well as an effective cleansing agent for the digestive system. It contains Protein, Vitamins A, C and B Complex, Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium

GINGER-Called the "wonder drug", the ginger root is actually a rhizome which is similar to several foods known to be consumed in the wild by parrots. It has been used for two thousand years by the Chinese to treat nausea and upset stomach. It is no coincidence that the Japanese serve fresh ginger slices with sushi as insurance against the parasites sometimes found in raw fish. Ginger is a wonderful remedy to use with baby parrots that go through brief periods of colic or throwing up their formula. I mix their formula in ginger tea instead of water and the problem is solved immediately. You can make the tea by steeping two or three slices of fresh ginger root in the water for ten or fifteen minutes. If your parrot must travel and is prone to motion sickness, ginger to the rescue! Add fresh ginger to the food and drinking water several hours before the trip and put a few slices in the carrier. Parrots seem to have an innate sense of what they need and will munch on the ginger to "quell their queasiness" during the trip.

i would like to ask you all regarding personal experience of using ginger and what quantity is good per serving and what frequency

it is considered that neem leaves tea helps to removes toxins from blood stream, which enhance immunity. daily use is not advised, every other week end its very good

Ginger is excellent for digestion. I don't see any reason not to consume ginger daily (for birds or humans).

I know this is an old post but wondering what you found. Also, how to give garlic to a Conure? I know it burns when I eat it raw so does it also burn a Conure? I know they eat all kinds of hot peppers and are assuming they don't burn them?
Thank you!!

I was wondering myself if ginger was safe to give to birds. I love ginger myself, and I'm happy to know I can safely share some with the flock!

Birds shouldn't have garlic. It can cause sickness and the destruction of red blood cells which can lead to death ):

Ginger and garlic are safe for our birds and give health benefits (digestion and indigestion and more) but in controlled amounts.

There are elements in both garlic and ginger that build up in a birds system (ours can handle it as we are bigger) that can cause some problems later down the line.
A small piece of ginger or garlic once in a while is fine, even beneficial and most birds seem to like the taste. Remember a small piece for a cag/mac/u2 isn't small for a budgie or small conure.

I read this up ages ago (the link i once had for it stopped working last i checked) so I can't remember the problems it can cause.

I add a small pinch of garlic or ginger powder to Pazu's wet food once a week (and chilli powder too).
I'll see if the link is alive, it's a good read and not over complicated.

WARNING: the following link does have a graphic image at the top of the article of a bird with an open wound on it's back. It is just the article writer illustrating that they used manuka to help the bird recover, there is a second image showing that it'd worked for them and the bird with no wound (full article in link). This is not actually the link I was thinking of but it does tell you about garlic, ginger and other herbs.

Edit/Addition:

Not warning needed. This page also shows good cinnamon and bad cinnamon.

Although I'm sure I read somewhere that ginger should be in moderation (like garlic) I can't seem to see anything on the matter and even found:
Why You & Your Bird Will Love Ginger

:p I quite like the bird channel so if they say it's so, then it's good enough for me. I'm off to have a ginger nut (if you're from the UK, you know what I mean ;) )

Apparently ginger is not effective against zombie threads. ;)

Tashi loves ginger too. Good stuff.

I make my own green tea pressure canned with many types of additional herbs like fresh cut ginger root and garlic. Well, my green cheek goes bonkers for the remaining ginger root pieces that are somewhat blanched, but still have good texture. When I get to the bottom of the tea its on like donkey kong. He will eat multiple pieces and really enjoys them. He will often go to his bird food (pellets) afterwards and grub down on them as well.

We have fresh ginger root and my wife makes a tea of it for her health, and purported to help with cancer (hollistic). Never thought about giving it to a Budgie. I have thought about Jerusalem Artichoke as we have tons of it growing on our place.
