Congo African Grey: Russell Peters (R.I.P. my baby)
Hi there,

I'm new to the forum and I'm hoping I can get some advice from some experienced parrot owners. I have a baby Congo Grey, he is 4 months old and I've had him for about a week and a half. His poop up until yesterday was dark green and not liquidy but now that he has been eating his fruits and vegtables his poop is blue and slightly more runny. I have tried to make an appointment with the vet but can't get one for over a week, my husband suggests it's because he is eating fruits and vegetables now but I want to make sure it's not a health concern. Does anyone have any feedback, does it sound like I should take Russell to the animal hospital or is my husband right.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks so much...... Wuvzbirdies :grey:

Such changes are expected if/when their diet changes. But at the same time stool conditions are usually the first sign of a medical problem.

The blue color catches my attention; is he eating blue fruits? If so then I would not be at all concerned, if not it might be worth a call to the vet to be safe.

Testing a stool sample is a pretty strait-forward (and affordable) procedure at the vet, so while I suspect your husband is right and it is nothing to worry about, a quick and easy test from the vet will give you some good peace of mind.

Of course also keep an eye out for any other changes - if his feather condition, behavior, temperament, or anything else is also changing it would be more suggestive of a medical concern.

Thank you Auggie's Dad! I think I will take your advice and take him to the animal hospital to test his stool, I will worry not knowing. I'm going through the new "Mom" phase and am noting every single thing he does!

Your Auggie is adorable, I was going to get a conure but I came across my CAG by chance and love him like he was my own child, I think my human children are a little jealous!

Thanks again......... April

Yeah, I wouldn't go into "alarmist" mode just yet, fruit will produce runny poo all the time (think about what happens to US if WE eat too much of it) ... And it is also normal for poo to be dyed by the foods that have been consumed. By what you have described here I would say that maybe your CAG has had a few too many blue berries ... if, in 12-24 hours, his poo returns to it's "normal" consistency/color you will know exactly what it was ...

Good for you keeping an eye on such things! You are right to be concerned, but I wouldn't panic just yet ... :)

Welcome to the forum!

(Hey, AD, here's a role reversal, for once I am saying a trip to the vet may not be needed and you are suggesting it .. .*LOL*)
