Or How to drive your parronts insane with worry for 24 hours.....
On last Thursday night, we were having "family" time, which means the birds are out, and we are listening to music, playing, or they are "helping" make dinner....this is a nightly occurance.
I had ordered pellets and swings, and the UPS driver knocked with the box.......My husband went to the door....checked to be sure none of the babies were nearby....and opened the door.......
Junior beelined out the small opening, and directly into the highest tree he could find!
Hubby went out and started calling to him, I caged the remaining, and went out to help.......it was 24 degrees at this time, and i could see he was shivering.....we called and whistled, and offered his favorite toys and treats.......he just sat there shivering away......after about 2 hours dusk came and he flew down onto the neighbors flat roof, and we couldn't see him anymore.....
We placed his cage on the deck, and hoped that he would see it and go to it......morning came no Junior.....we called and rang his bells, and whistled....nothing.......I was sure he had frozen to death......I contacted our local rescue JoJo the Grey and she was so wonderful, she got in contact with every club and rescue nearby and gave all the info in case someone found him.
Later on we had hubbies uncle come up with a ladder and got the neighbors permission to go up on the roof (expecting to find him frozen (I couldn't get this out of my head)) We were actually happy that he wasn't there....he was still alive and had moved on....but where?
I walked the neighborhood for 3 solid hours Friday afternoon, looking up into the trees, whistling...I'm sure more than one person wondered what I was "on".
Hubby decided around 7ish that he would like hot dogs for dinner......we had none in the house....so I reluctantly agreed to go to the store with him.....he went out and started the truck....as I was walking out the door I looked up, and who do I see flying carefree and happy across the sky????? JUNIOR So I start calling him, and he flys......away from me! to the next block!
I jump in the truck, and have hubby drive over to where I think he must have landed, and sure enough....there he is....in another tree!
The poor owner was out front, as we rushed her house......she thought her roof was caving in or something.....we explained and she was so sweet letting us into the yard, so we could call from under the tree.....
FINALLY, hubby gets him to fly down....and what comes running around the corner, just as he is about to land?????? A big ol' Tomcat! Argghhhhh...so I had to startle him to keep him from landing....luckily he just changed course and went for the steps....where I scooped him up and scolded/hugged/kissed/warmed him...all while he is chatting a mile a minute trying to tell me all about what he's seen in the last day.....
He ate like a fiend and drank more water than I ever thought he could hold.....we took him to the vet Sat. and she said he looks fine, keep an eye out for any signs of congestion, discharge etc etc....but he is doing well, and back to his old self .
His Parronts are still shakey, and have learned a valuable lesson......We know how very lucky we are that things turned out the way they did......
His wings are now clipped
