Just wanted to share with you this information. Today we went to vets for nail clipping. This was the first time to that particular clinic, but as soon as my CAG stepped out of the carrier the vet told - "here we have a female". I asked him how he knew, so he told that females have smaller head and it is also bit more round and their colors are brighter in compare to males.

By the way he was right, we have a female approved by DNA test.

Also he told me that she looks beautiful and in good health, yey:)

The aviary where I got both of our Greys does the same and has yet to be wrong. She always says the males have a flatter head and I am amazed that she has been right the entire time (probably 19-20 babies over the last year).

When you see tons and tons of the same species, you eventually get a good grasp of the gender even if "visual sexing" is not "possible".

I'm sure some of long term breeders we have on the forum have a pretty good success rate with visual sexing their own birdies. BUT unless you have a dimorphic bird like an ekkie or a budgie, etc. Then dna/surgical is the only fool proof way to know! ;)

Congrats on your baby girl! My vet was also pretty sure Merlin was a boy too ("just have that feeling that he's male!" type thing) - he was right! :)

Somehow our breeder was wrong, he thought that we had a boy because it's size was very big.

This is really interesting. I haven't seen enough African grays with known genders to make a guess at what Kenji is. What do you think? It's probably hard to tell by photos alone lol

Male on Kinji! ;)

I've posted additional links on visually sexing cags in this thread

Ashley, I'm just noticing this, but it seems as if Kinji has swelling right between his eyes and nostrils? It could be normal, but it just doesn't look right to me? Could be that I'm just extra sensitive to oddities like that since my bourke has slight swelling on on side of her face that isn't there on the other?

Very interesting post Monica! I went in that link and found some useful info. But I can't even see under Kenji's tail to determine...lol....

At some point I'd like to get Kenji DNA sexed, so if he's a boy you will get a good star ;)

I'll check him in the morning to see if there is anything strange. He had a small scrape on his face the first month from when he fell to the floor(so scary when that happens), some of these photos are from around that time.

Well it's hard to tell from the picture, so I can only say that you have very beautiful AG:)

Thank you Monica, as I understood we can use this method only after 1st molting?

Yep, I understand what you mean. Even before we got DNA answers I felt that we have a girl. She was somehow "girlish":)

There used to be another one that determined sex via the [shape of] eyes! It was an interesting one!

I'm probably just over-thinking things, I'm sure Kenji is fine! After all, he's been taken well cared of his entire life so far! And I don't see that changing any time soon!

This site has some scary photos that show swelling around the eye, one of the causes being sinus infections. I found it because my bourke has swelling on one side and it wont go away, but it doesn't seem to be harming her, either.
Swelling by Eyes - Arizona Exotic Bird Rescue, Inc.

I think it's just how Kenji looks and he's fine! He doesn't look like the other birds in the photos and he is a healthy little guy!

At least the first molt... but it may take 3 or more years before some males get their adult colors! And the tail method is not 100% accurate!

I took a close look at him today and it looks like normal bone structure, I think the lighting/shadows in the photos just make it look a little more dramatic

Maybe we're looking at different things, do you have MS paint or something where you can circle or have a arrow pointing to the area you are talking about?

I took two photos off of Google of different birds and circled the area I thought you were talking about

Oh wow, I didn't see that link you posted until just now. Crazy eye swelling!

I took a few new photos so we could see better. To me it still just looks like normal bone structure. I'll make sure to look out for swelling now that I know of it, that's crazy and scary!

Those are some great shots! Can definitely see how the bone structure helps shape the face! Thanks for the photos! :)
