Hi there, Ecclipse is unable to get into the parrot forum, server problems.
Ecclipse e-mailed me in a frantic state.

Hugo's droppings smell - what does that mean? I thought that maybe I was giving him too much fruit and cut that down. I'm going to phone the vet tomorrow. He was doing so well!!! What am I doing wrong? He is eating the right foods and everything. His wing is playing up again and I cant check it because he goes mad!!!!

Im at my wits end - I think Im the worst parrot owner around, I cant seem to get him better!!! Hugo has stopped talking altogether and is very temperamental.

The vet is away at the moment.

Any suggestions to assist Ecclipse would be greatly appreciated.
I will e-mail replies back to her.

Antoinette

Take care
:grey:

I think we'd need more info.

His droppings smell? So do mine - but I'm fine. What do they smell like? Do they look different?

Keep trying the vet if he appears sick.

Smelly droppings (sulfur smell or other rotten smell) indicates bacterial infection (secondary to antibiotic therapy) in birds and people. I hope this is not the case. Was Hugo on anitbiotics for a long time? When people are on anti. b a long time there can changes in the stool because the medication kills off the bad bacteria and good bacteria in the gut. One should be eating a probiotic diet. Not being a vet I do not know if it is the same in parrots but it could be. Probiotic for parrots could be yogurt.

If this is the issue in a person or dog or cat the Dr. would give a medication called Flagyl. Usually along with the odorous stools comes diarrhea. Sorry for the bearer of potential bad news. Please say hello to Ecc. for me.

I am finally back on the forum - its been so lonely, thank you Antionette for opening up a thread and for everyones support. The server has been the bane of my life but I seem to be back on track. SB - you hit the nail on the head. Hugo was on antibiotics from October through to the end of December and the vet did give me probiotics which is in a syrup form. I tried EVERYTHING to get him to take it but he would not touch it. She said that his liver would suffer, please any tricks to get him to take it would be great. His stomach has been running for weeks and I cant give him anymore anitbiotics. He was dewormed in Aug last year so is only due in Aug this year.

He sits fluffed up alot and is not as active as he used to be. His droppings dont smell rotten but have a strong smell to them - hard to explain the smell. He also doesnt like to leave his cage area and doesnt want to be handled much. He is very territorial about his cage and gets very aggressive when I clean it. As you guys know he has always been very nervous but not like this. He is still loving but seems depressed. Im feeding him his pellets, veggies and fruit but cut the fruit down as I thought it might be making his tummy run. What do you do when you know the vet cant help you anymore. Taking him to her would do nothing as she cant give him anymore medication. I want my bird back - I miss him...:(

I just dont understand why this has happened, surely the antibiotics would of cleared it up?

We missed you Ecc. This kind of thing with your bird is difficult. He does not know what is good for him. The only thing you can do is put this syrup in the food he likes best and try spoon feeding him. Give him lots of love and attention (you already are I am sure). Let him know he has to participate in the recovery process too. When you have done all you can then it is up to the bird and what else your beliefs may be. Activity and love will hopefully bring him out of the depression. I would not force him to come out of the cage if he is not ready. Think posative and try, try, try. That is all you can do. Huggies

You guys are the best!!!!! Its so great to be back in contact - I feel that I can cope better!!! I got hold of my vet and we had a long chat. She says that Hugos droppings are mainly white because he is drinking alot of water. She said that she had two other birds in who had the same symptoms with the droppings. Apparantly the batch of pellets Im feeding him has something wrong with them and they mixed the vit/min content wrong. She said I must change the pellets and keep him on a strict diet of pellets and apple till next week. She said I must pursue with the probiotic. I crafted a plan and mixed it with strong juice and put it in a syringe. I then got as much in as possible. I cant hold him or he goes mad so hopefully I can do the same tomorrow. Some of it didnt go in but its better than nothing. Im just so scared that he gets scared of me and then I cant get near him. I know that sounds lame but Ive worked so hard to get him used to me. I am much positive but how unlucky is that!!!!!! First he was sick then the batch was mixed wrong - I guess I can just laugh in relief.

I gave him lotsa TLC and when he gets tired he shows me he wants his cage (+-10mins at a time)

Congrats SB n Ant for becoming moderators - you guys deserve it!!!! AD made a great choice.

Have missed AD's dry sense of humour - heehee
