Figaro Congo African Grey 10 yrs old .
Hi All,
Im Tammy I have 2 kids a 60+ yr old Double yellow headed amazon.
and a 10 yr old Congo African Grey.
I joined this site Because i need advice and help.
Baby My Double yellow head is not doing good .
Infact we might loose him any day now .
I know while there is No way to stop old age .
I am concerned for Figaro .
I got Figaro after Feeding 4 Congo's as New borns
the Breeder offered me moneys but i asked for the bird who had given me kisses daily for 2 months .
so now for a cage for a bird that was going to grow .
One in paper 500.00 went to pick it up and the bird was still in it .
Owner said im sorry but the cage cant go today my wife was supposed to get the bird to the vet to be put down.
Worried i asked is he sick ?
Nope just liked to eat my hands . the owner fed him Sunflower seeds for 4 yrs .
He was fat and unhealthy but all he needed was Real food.
So i Begged and i do mean Begged for the birds life .
now 10 yrs later im loosing him.
Please i need help for Figaro .
Baby has been more of a Mother to her all her life .
when she stopped eating after letting the breeder have the other 3 greys she stopped eating and Baby fed her .
she took to him as if he was her Mom.
IM scared and worried .
Do any of you have any ideas ?
Another Parrot ? More time ?
OR ? Tammy

Welcome to the forums. Parrots are smart. I'm sure she knows Baby is old, and she knows whats coming.

Another bird would likely just add to the confusion and add one more stressful change. Getting a new bird to make the current one happy is (almost if not always) a horrible idea.

More time. Spend time with Figaro, each of you will morn in your own way. Let her morn, and it will pass.

Tammy I feel your pain honestly....
When Baby does pass on, just be there for Figaro.
Give Figaro lost of love and attention, spend lots of time together.
I am sure they feel the same pain, we experience, but they can't express themselves, the way us humans do.
When you are at home, take Figaro out his cage, more than you normally would.
Make Figaro feel so so so special.
He might even think it's his fault the Baby has gone, we don't know what they are thinking.
If you are thinking about getting another bird, perhaps wait a while, let nature takes it's course, as see how you feel.
Just remember, don't ever forget, you did save Baby's once before.
You have given him, the 10 best years of his life.
You will always have those beautiful memories, to be treasured FOREVER
Hopefully other members will give you great advise, who have had a similar experience.
WE WILL BE HERE FOR YOU ALWAYS
Take care

Excellent advice from AD and Antionette. Being a hospice nurse by profession I think it is better to just keep both birds comfortable. They are smarter than you think. Nature has a way of handling this event. All you can do is be there for them both.

Thank you all so Much as i was not sure what to do really .
I had them both in separate cages for the first yr .
the second yr they would both break out and be in the other birds cage when i woke up.
I have both birds next to me now and baby is being quiet , Figaro is with us . i do think she knows .
I have over 300 movies just for them as most are cartoons and Disney.
the Avian vet cannot find anything wrong with baby Gasped when i said he was 60 Plus yrs old .
I thought that was bad and he said just love him as you always do and be strong.
Ive been singing to him soft all night when he wakes up or tips over .
i tried to just have Baby with me but he was upset more with out Figaro.
They are well bonded and so much a buddy buddy system
the Diet i feed is
pretty much the kitchen sink every thing that is good for them . meats ,eggs, breads fruits and safe veggies . Some Dairy.
even 2 new Coco nuts.
the favorite food is messy and comes for Christmas time .
Pamagranit Sorry spelling ?
this guy has touched my life the minute he jumped in to help Figaro was the minute i knew he was not lost. ...
I hope the angles sing to him as he really is a good Dancer and kisser . Tammy

One of our Presidents had a Parrot a Macaw i believe thats still with us last i checked,
Was in the pentagon so ?
Baby is hanging in there still tipped 2 times and I put him back on his feet singing.
we ate some chicken, and some Yogurt. he didn't want the grapes or Pamagranit.
So i cheated and gave him some fresh Apple Juice instead of Water.
i have not seen him drinking or trying to for 8 hrs .
Ive been dropping 1 drop at 2 minute intra vols on his tongue.
you know just to keep liquid in him .
He's only pooped on me once .. I taught him to say " Bombs Away " But he didn't that time .
Ill be up Until mark gets up its been 24 hrs for me . one of us had to sleep and he knows i would be here any way.

Since they share the big cage Home made 8 ft tall by 5 by 6
im thinking i might slowly get something that figaro would feel more comphy in.
Im really really worried about her.
she said Oh baby In a sad Voice and has her head under his like she is trying to hold him up and she is also on his weak side the side he keeps falling over on.
I called a breeder Last night for a new Vet and info.
Maybe some new ideas But she said 60 was old for a bird especially a Amazon.
i read anywhere from 40 -80 yrs . tammy

I just did the Search again Charlie Belonged to Winston Churchhill
Parrot Charlie

The oldest living parrot (108 years) belongs to blue and yellow macho. Usually the parrots of these species live up to 60 years. But this parrot is 108 years old and is in a sanctuary in Britain.

before i got anything and wanted to learn about Parrots , the Breeder asked me how much i knew.
I told her water bird cage and seed.

she had me look up ages and said hun your 30 now what are you going to do with a Parrot that can live to be 80

Really made me think.
Figaro will live with my niece who is now 16 and very Much in love with her.

You know West when they are babies they are not very good on their feet and we put them in baskets of sorts until the little legs are stronger. I am wondering if Baby could do this for safety. Of course you would have to clean more. That way she may not hurt herself in a fall. Her feet must be weak or she has lost a sense of balance. We will keep on thinking for you. Please give her a little scratch on the head from me and a hug for yourself.

Baby is still with us .

vet said he will look better before he goes.
he has slept all day only to get water on his own Per mark
So im up all night with him we are taking turns and shifts.
Neither one of us want him to be A lone when he goes and we will both be there with him to to say See you in a blink of an eye.
