Devastated CAG

Cookie my 4 months old african grey let her out of her cage on friday like any other day was flying around like normal when i had to go to the next room , next thing i hear a loud thud i ran to the room to see her on the floor bleeding making noises she had damaged her wing and that is where her blood was coming from. took her to vets who took great care of her stopped bleeding gave her pain killers and took xrays which ive just found the results now and it aint looking good shes broken the bone right top half of her wing which is inoperable and they have consulted with specialist also and agree . so options i have which they have said is bandage her wing they will give her painkillers and couple of weeks will heal with absolute no chance of her flying the other options were amputate (no chance) or needle (no chance) .

Basically wanted to ask how would a cag be without her flight . Shes has been a real fighter and i am standing by her whatever i can do 4life

A bird can get along just fine flightless. There are many who choose to clip their birds and there are also other disabled birds who live long happy lives.

I'm sorry to hear about the accident. I know it's very hard on both of you.

I am so sorry to hear about Cookie! Karen is right, she should be fine without flight. Thank goodness there was no internal damage!

tnx just worried that she dont get depressed as she was for a 4 month old had good flight on her . Today eating well and making her normal sounds wonder when she realizes she cant fly

I'm so sorry about your baby's accident!

It might help you feel better to hear my fid's story :

Percy had a life before he joined us and at some time during his previous life, he broke his wing. I was told about it before I adopted him but I didn't mind. I did however have him checked by the AV who examined him and said that his wing had been broken in two places (top bone and the bottom bone) and that it had healed crooked because he didn't get treatment (don't even get me started on that topic!)

Anyway, the vet said he is experiencing no pain as a result of the wonky wing so we decided not to 'try and fix it'.

Percy can't fly - he can flap to the ground but that's about it. His wing is crooked and stands away from his body. It doesn't seem to bother him and he is a very happy birdy. Don't think however that lack of flight has impeded his ability to get into all kinds of trouble! LOL! He is an expert climber!

They can have full and happy lives without flying. Your baby will learn to adapt.

Awwww.... I am so sorry to hear about this....but on the upside, once she heals she will get along just fine without flight.

Our little conure, Franklin, he has a broken wing as well...he came from the pet store that way, I think it happened when he go his wings clipped for the store...although I don't know....we didn't notice it until months later, he's such an active little guy. But one day, he was taking an afternoon snooze when I realized that his right wing set funny on him, wasn't flush from his neck like his left side.

Once I realized it, I was all a panic...but it didn't bother him at all...I felt all guilty wondering how I wouldn't have noticed something like that?? How could I NOT see he was hurt...started "beating myself up" about it, then decided I'd look at all the pictures we took of him the day we brought him home...and sure enough, his wing was set "wrong" in the pictures.

It was broken then, and because of his bright and shining personality...we just never noticed!

Anyway, he's never been very inclined to try to fly and if he get's super startled and takes flight...he can only flutter to the nearest person, chair, sofa, or the ground...never gaining any lift, just a steady descent over about 15-20 feet maximum.

Here's a picture that shows his broken wing. One of him giving himself a massage and the other of him napping.

Your CAG will heal and have a happy, healthy life playing with toys, climbing all around, finding all kinds of trouble...you'll see, it's heartbreaking for you...yes...but she will adapt.

oh i am so sorry to hear about that!!! but dont worry she will be ok with ought flight just keep her - busy with challenging toys when she heals so she gets more exercise! I rescued a Sun Conure who had his wing broken by another bird before i got him and he never could fly again but he was a very happy bird even withought flight!

Your bird should adapt just fine...we have a 20 yr old amazon that is missing an entire wing and she gets along fine without it.

My mums bird was clipped before she had him and it was done wrong so he has never been able to fly, it doesn't seem to bother him at all he's still happy and got an attitude lol! Sorry to hear about what happened to your bird, you must have been so shaken up finding him like that

tnx for the replys guys just come back from vets they recommended to keep her in a small cage to restrict her movements while she heals they say around 2 3 weeks will heal .

Kudos to you for your prompt response! I'm so sorry for the trauma though, that has to be rough He will be OK!

managed to buy a small cage yesterday she has been in it a day now dont think she likes it very much as she seems to be not eating at and put her favorites food in there?

Just a update she has started eating but shes not herself at all in the small cage feel sad for her

That's terrible! I'm so sorry to here this happened. Greys are such heavy bodied birds, when they crash they put a lot of stress on their body. My African grey broke the tip of his wing when he was very young, his phalanges and metacarpals look like a subtle lightning bolt shape. Several of the follicles are permanently damaged making the feathers grow in very weak. He has some serious self confidence issues, due to the fact if he gets scared he will always crash land.

Why didn't you go with pins? It seems like they could have healed the bone better that way.

Reasons for not going with pins was the vets plus advice from other vets said it was inoperable that's what they said and let it heal naturally its been exact a week now she will NEVER fly again but she doing much better and has been eating and started making her normal sound. Cant wait to take her out of her small cage into her regular cage.
