Hi. Does anyone know how to read the info on a closed band? I am looking to see if the information may indicate how old the parrot is. This is the band number and it is a closed purple band JC8057. It is suppose to be a three year old female Congo African Grey. Thank you. Elaine

Is there any more information on the leg band, such as a state?

I've come across one breeder called JC's Aviary, although no information about the color of the band, and the link is dead.

Another breeder that goes by Coleman Aviaries, however it says the color of the leg band is blue.

Information about the band seems to point to Colemans Aviaries, which does not have a website. There might be a workable e-mail using the link above.

The link below contains the phone number of the aviary, although I don't know if the phone number is still in service or not since the website is gone.

Thank you both. I saw the JC Avary too and saw the same. I did a little reading and if what I am reading is correct, the two initials is the breeder and the two numbers right after is the year hatched and the last two numbers is to distinguish which chick is which. This Grey is suppose to be two to three years old but if what I read is true it would mean that he orvshe was born in 1980 which is way older then what I am being told.

I think the full four numbers may be the birds identification, not necessarily anything to do with the the birds hatch year. I mean, if you think about it, a large time breeder may require more than 99 numbers per year to identify all of his birds.

In 2012, someone posted about a JC leg band on a quaker parrot, and the first two numbers were 40. Highly unlikely for that quaker to be over 50 years old! Another quaker has a code that starts with 48.

And I also came across this message....

In case anyone is looking for the breeder of the band described below, it is likely Coleman's Aviaries in FL. The phone # is 850-682-0819. However, I was disappointed to find that even though I provided a description of the band (number, type/material, color, etc.), the breeder was unable to tell me anything about the bird. All I really wanted to know was an approximate age. I was told that he didn't keep track of the numbers (or any records) until November 2005, but that he has been involved in breeding for 30 years. I thought this was rather unfortunate, but wanted to post this info for future reference in the event someone else ends up with one of these birds on a "second-hand" basis.

Anyway, here is the information I have for tracing leg bands.

There were two previous sites that had a lot of information about leg bands on them, but have since been closed down. This site is an unofficial leg band registry.

This website has a list of breeders and leg band codes
parrot breeders and band numbers, tracking your bird band

A YH group that helps trace bands (this is where I got the info from)

A few places that produce leg bands may or may not help trace the band if it's one of theirs...

Thanks again. I am not experienced at all. I just did a google search and one article mentioned what I said. Thanks for the info. I will search some more. It is more a curiosity thing at this point. I was all set to adopt a friend for Hahnna and I but just found out I will be a first time grandmom so with this news I will probably hold off for awhile until things settle down. Thanks foe the information, both of you.

You may or may not be able to find out how old the grey is exactly, but regardless of age, best of luck, either way! :)
