I have plans to go buy materials to make toys for my CAG, but I caught her eating and trying to swallow the leather from one she has now, and I suspect she may have eaten some wood from another toy. I am going to keep a very close eye on her in case she needs to go to the vet, but I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on materials that would be safe.

I know it's not because she's hungry, she gets fruit and yogurt in the morning, seeds to graze on all day and then grains and veggies at night. She only had two pathetic toys in her cage when I bought her, so is it possible she doesn't know how to just play with them, rip them up and drop them? Is there a way she can be taught this to the degree that I could leave her with toys while I am away? I wouldn't want to leave her with nothing to entertain herself, but I also need to protect her.

what a silly girl !

I have 2 Grays, one female and one male, they are 17 years old, from day one they go through there toys, most are made of pine and special cotton rope, plastic, leather, paper, cardboard etc. I have never seen them swallow any parts from the toys, they just munch on them and eventually spit them out and chew more there toys. If your going to make your own toys, get the special cotton rope, any inks used make sure its animal safe, same for the papers and other objects you will use to build the toys.

Ditto. Generally speaking they don't swallow wood. They are supposed to tear up their toys... If they don't tear up their toys, they tend to tear up themselves...

Tearing up toys is WAAAAYYY better.

I started buying blocks, fake clothes pins (no metal) and craft/popsicle sticks and using food colouring to dye them then I string them up with cotton rope and pony beads. I have experimented with other types of materials, but those are the ones she likes the best. I need to buy them pre-drilled though because drilling enough for a few toys took like six hours. And she goes through toys really fast but better that than the alternative. I was overreacting, she wasn't eating them.
