Re homing advice

I am thinking ( not in the near future but ) of getting an African gray just looking for advice realy

I would like to re home one that the owner can no longer care for but I was wondering if they come round to new owners easy enough or would it be a lot easyer to get a hand reared baby

Get out there and handle all kinds of birds and see if an African Gray is for you. I'll take a rehome just to give an older bird a home, and to not support birdie mills who breed for profit.

Hand raised babies and rehomes both have their disadvantages. Either way the most important thing to do is educate yourself. Learn how to deal with the hormones during breeding season, and to always remember these birds are not a domesticated species. They are perfectly happy to live without us, and care less about our need to snuggle and pet them. However certain species are easier to deal with than others. African Grays are super intelligent and need LOTS of enrichment. And always remind yourself while you are searching for your perfect bird: "Am I capable of being this bird's perfect owner?"

Except for 2 budgies, ours are all rehomes from various situations, good & bad. One 'zon went through 4 homes in 3 months [through no fault of his own] before landing here in 2011. Several people have said, "I want THAT relationship!" when they see his eyes closed with bliss while I am preening his feathers. He was eight when he came here. His first home was long-term, then he was passed around & should have had reason to suspect I wasn't going to be around long, either. But from the moment I asked, "Pet the birdy?" and he offered his neck for a scritch, we were together.

You can achieve a bond with any parrot that wants to bond with you. Getting a baby won't guarantee that bond & getting a rehome won't necessarily prevent it.

BUT get out there & meet a lot of parrots. I was 100% sure I wanted a Grey - still love them. But they pick their humans as surely as humans pick their own mates. "My" Grey is sitting on my husband's lap, soaking up his affection. If I try to put fingers to feathers, I will get bitten.

The amazon I mentioned? My husband's choice. I wanted nothing to do with amazons until I met this one.
