Foraging toys

What are these best types of foraging toys? I have seen some different plastic ones for sale, but I worry that they would grow old of them or become smarter than their toy.

I have also seen a variety of DIY foraging toys too.

Should I have a mixture of both?

How many would you have in a cage at a time?

What are the best treats, nuts, seeds to have in them.

Thanks! :grey:

I have purchased a large variety of the plastic foraging toys for my grey. They do get boring to him after a while, so I usually rotate them out for a few weeks and reintroduce them in a new way/with a new treat after a while. But like i said, I have a lot of them to rotate, so it can almost be like a new toy sometimes if I haven't used it in a while. Even if your bird knows how to use the toy, it's still better than getting it easily out of a bowl!
I will stick pellets, nutriberries, or nuts in a new foraging toy and let Malcolm have at It for a few days. Then i will take it out. A few weeks later I will offer it to him again with shredded paper and treats inside it for a little bit, then try wrapping the whole toy in paper, etc. so it is always interesting. Also, hanging it in different parts of his cage make a huge difference. I always hang them right above a branch at first to make it easy. As he gets more used to a toy I hang it from the middle of the cage (so he has to hang upside down) or near the bottom of the cage (where he doesn't go as often).

I don't think it matters at all if they're DIY toys or bought toys, bought foraging toys are usually expensive. It's fun making the toys yourself as well.

As far as treats go, it depends what bird you have and what he likes, try and give him different vegetables, fruit, nuts and see what he likes best.
Kiwiberry LOVES sunflower seeds, I've been spoiling her (quite) a bit over Christmas, I have to admit. She's really picky with fruit, she really enjoys apple however.

Don't just stick the foraging toys in the cage, put them around play areas too :)
