Hi guys,

My first post, regarding my parrot. I have an African grey parrot approximately 45 years old brought back from africa 35 years ago. He had been great uptil now. For years and years we have always had a dog in the house and he has got on great with them. Now all the dog have passed away and since the house has been pet free he imidiately stopped talking, whistling and hardly eating. Then he has started falling off his pearch. I think myself that he is fretting. There is always one or more people in the house to keep him company. (now he gets special attention). When he falls off his pearch he appears to be extremely shocked and kind of paralised for about 10 minutes then he will wobble around on the bottom of his cage. Could anyone shed any light on this. And how can I help him.

Thank you for your time,

Wizzkid

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Sounds like a neurological problem. He needs vet care!

So dearly sorry for the loss of your dog.

However, about the cage. I would start off by lowering his perches and toys so he doesn't fall as hard and padding down the grate of his cage with newspapers or something soft. I know it's not the best diet, but have you tried offering him more millet, sunflowers and things like that? It's better to have him eat junk foods than nothing (IMO).
How has he been with his toys? Try adding in more puzzle and foraging toys with treats to assist him on keeping his mind distracted .

Maybe leave on the TV or radio to give him some background noise. And make sure it's warm enough in the room with the weather changing might help. Good luck!!

Have changed his diet and he just doesn't seem interested in food. I have been thinking of other food I can try, but everything he likes is bad for him apperently. He used to love sugar cane, thats what he was brought up on as well as nuts. But I have heard that sugar cane is bad for him. I think it is safe to say he likes sweet things, but once again I have been told that he should not be eating those things. Have you any ideas what I could try him on that would be ok.

Thanks in advance,

Wizzkid

Hu Guys,

Sorry not got back to you sooner. I have to inform you, that scooby (my parrot) sadly passed away, before vetinary action could be taken. I am not sure what the problem was, but I have spoke to an avian vet at a zoo that I sometimes do some work and once I had explained everything he said, depression due to the death of my dog, (a partner from the animal world) as for many years it has had the company of a canine friend and no matter what we try to do that could not be replaced. Due to the depression a stroke was possible. Amoungst many other possabilities.

Sorry don't want to go into too much detail as it is too upsetting.

Thank you for your help,

Pete.
