So yesterday afternoon I notice that Charlie ate less than usual. This morning his morning poop looked like just water. So I took half days leave and got him to the vet this morning, expecting the vet to tell me I am being a paranoid parront.

My heart dropped when he told me Charlie has pneumonia. I know parrots does not have lungs, so I assume that was his way to explain that there is some kind of airsack infection. So now Charlie is in hospital. Definitely two days, maybe until Friday.

He said I caught it very early, so he should be OK, but I can not help but worry. The worst part is not being able to be with him, or watch him, and leaving his care to someone else....even though I know they are professionals.[emoji22] They said they will send me an text tomorrow to let me know how he is doing, but I so badly want to phone them and ask!

I'm very sorry that your parrot has pneumonia... It's OK though since your vet seems very optimistic. You're a very good owner. Just the other day I got a text from a friend stating "I know you like birds, so... Is something wrong with mine?" and that's it! And I couldn't believe my eyes!

You did the right thing. Look, I don't think you should be "pushy" but maybe you can call tonight and see if he's been OK.

May I ask why you aren't allowed to see your parrot? I sometimes leave my parrot with my parents, and Simba has known my parents for 4 complete years (because he lived with me while I was living with them!) and he can stay just fine for 1-2 days with no issues. But after 2 days without seeing me, he begins to act out... haha. Parrots, right?

Well, best of luck! Please keep us informed! OK?

Regards.

Oh no. I'm so sorry poor Charlie is ill. It's great that you saw the signs and reacted so early, I hope his condition improves and he gets to come home soon.

I've worked for a vet and had my own pets stay at clinics, it's common practice for worried parronts to call and even visit sick pets. I wouldn't hesitate to call or stop by, that's just my
opinion for what it's worth.

Thank you guys!
Zkyevolved, I suppose they don't want me to see him as it might upset him because he can not come home.

Saskia, thanks for the info! See you learn something new every day, Lol.

Allee, I took you advice and phoned. All they told me was that he is ok. So now I have to wait for tomorrow to get more info.

Darn, I'm sorry they didn't tell you more, but I'm sure they would have let you know if they had serious concerns. Good point that a visit from Mom could upset Charlie. I know you're worried, but I think Charlie's going to be just fine.

I'm sorry to hear about Charlie. BUT I'm glad you caught it quickly and the vet seems confident he'll be okay! That's great. I think he will recover just fine. He's safe at the avian vet's. I know it's still worrisome regardless. Do keep us posted.

Thank you so much for the support everyone, it means a lot coming from people who understands what these birds means to us.

My mom (love her to bits) was more concerned about the cost than anything else, not understanding that my fids are literary like my children to me. (I never had any human children, Lol, so I recon I am allowed! Lol)

One of the things that bothers me the most is that he does not understand why he was taken there and left behind by his mommy. Why he can not sleep in his cage where he feels safe tonight. We know it is what is best for them, but I can't help but wonder what his little bird brain has come up with.

I will let you guys know as soon as I hear from them tomorrow morning. It is going to be a long night.

Hoping Carlie is feeling better. So glad he has a good parront who was observant enough to catch this early enough to be treatable!

Just heard back from them. They say Charlie looks very good, although he hasn't eaten much overnight. That is all the text said. I can not wait for my boy to come home. I hate that empty cage!

"Looks very good" sounds like good news to me. I know, it's still normal to worry, but I think you could not worry so much after hearing that :). I think Charlie will be with you soon. You just want him to be in the hospital for long enough that he gets all the professional care he needs before he goes home.

Sure sounding good so far!

If you make a BIG fuss of him when you collect him, with luck he'll view you as being his "rescuer", leaving the "bad" people to be those at the vet's office.

Whenever possible, we get a friend to transport our birds to the vet (we do the same for her), so that we're ALWAYS the rescuer when we pick them up.

The one time I didn't do this, my 'Zon hated me for 2 weeks, and attacked mercilessly whenever I got near him! He eventually got over it, but it was a sad (and painful!) couple of weeks!

First off, you did the right thing by bringing your baby to the vet and I'm glad it was caught early! I pray for a healthy recovery. Birds do have lungs by the way! I hope the vet didn't tell you that because that would be incorrect!!!

My only concern is the fact that they won't let you see your bird at all? They actually said you cannot visit? When one of my past birds was hospitalized for 2 days I was able to visit him, and they phone me every morning to update me on how he was through the night. Sending a text message? That seems awfully unprofessional. If I were you I would take it upon yourself to call and press for answers. This is your baby and you have every right to be concerned and get answers. Even if there is no major update you have a right for reassurance. I would definitely suggest calling. Something doesn't seem right about that, I don't like that...(not you, them.)

I hope your bird comes home safe and sound as soon as possible :) Never hesitate to call for answers. I am glad to hear about the update about the possibility of him coming home soon!
