Hello there , Im new here and in need of advice
Well I guess its the same eternal question:confused:

How can I make my african grey (lulu) eat her pellte ?
Wel I tried harrison , roudybush , zupreem fruite blend , zupreem natural and nothing accpeted , I think she says "mommy even if you bring it from the other side of the world ,I wont eat it but dont worry I will design my cage floor with it as well as my fruit "
I tried to give the pellet at all times and give her mix of seed only 3 or 2 times a day because I cant let her lose weight when she is recovering and dont have all of her feathers
I tried to to grind it And add water and mix it with her seed but she would throw chunks of it on the floor
I tried to give it to her by hand and pretending to eat , she would eat afew pieces and throw the rest

Im still trying and the vet recommended to change her diet as fast as I can as well as giving her vitamins

Sorry I wrote a long post:(

Thank you :53:

The trick is consistency. I understand your frustration of wanting the best for their dietary needs but birds are creatures of habits, and it takes time to transition or change things for them.
It also depends on the bird, some take longer to transition over to pellets while some take it right away.

This is how I started my parrots on pellets:
Try placing all of your options on one dish, all separated, and see which one she takes the most interest in. It might take a while for this too, but once you find the one, keep using it. It sounds like she's more interested in the water and crushed pellets, maybe add in some seeds to the mix so she has to eat the pellets for the seeds? From there, you can slowly reduce to the amount of seeds.

Another thing you might want to try is sprouting. I know Silversage and Amjokai are big users of this method and have a lot of information on it (hopefully they'll chime in ;) ). But basically, it's much healthier then seeds and pellets and can transition seed loving birds to a fresh food diet easier.

I don't know that you can make her, but you might be able to help convert her by sprinkling some apple juice on it and eating a small spoonful of it in front of her...

I might be inclined to pour some Roudybush Maintenance or Maintenance Diet in a small bowl, sprinkle it with some apple juice, enough to make it palatable for me, then slowly eat it in front of her.....sitting there with her might entice her to eat it rather than just try it, since most companion birds are interested in pleasing their humans.....

In the wild, a bird's parents, siblings and other flock members show chicks what to eat.....so, since you are her human flock member, it should work.....it's worked with my birds, the several times I had to do it...you don't have to do it every day, but when you do, it should be just you, your grey & any other family members who want to help.....

It is good to gradually make the change, starting with 3/4 the normal amount of seed, with 1/4 the pellets and gradually changing the amounts, as she begins to eat more of the pellets.....

I tried to to grind it And add water and mix it with her seed but she would throw chunks of it on the floor I tried to give it to her by hand and pretending to eat , she would eat afew pieces and throw the rest Well, don't pretend.....

Im still trying and the vet recommended to change her diet as fast as I can as well as giving her vitamins Be careful of synthetic supplements, fresh foods will provide the same things, but are natural, not synthetic.....

Sorry I wrote a long post Not too long, I've written them, where they are too long for the thread page and I needed 3 more.....

Good luck.....

Its my second week of trying with roudybush in both sizes but I like you idea of putting all pellets options and see her choice even though i would like to choose the best for her since not all pellets are the same I guess
I did try mixing water and girnded pellets but still no hope
Sprouting , I will give it a try :D

Zilla likes her pellets soaked in either apple juice or cranberry juice. I buy organic no additives juices at my local health food store for her, I also use her golenfeast golden obles pellets strung into toys (they have a hole in the middle like cheerios) and she will eat some of them while playing.

Thank you Amanda
I will try the pellet you mentioned since im looking for other brands
Can you please tell about what you give with this pellet to make it complete diet as well as which type of golden feast your bird accepted ?

Goldenfeast golden obles pellets, and I feed a wide variety of whole grain pasta (cooked), brown & wild rices (cooked) 15 bean mix (soaked over night and cooked) and lots of fresh veggies & fruits, berries. Zilla also gets fresh and dried peppers (all varieties) nutri berries (all varieties) and she does still get about 1/8 cup of seed mix daily (she doesn't eat it all, but she still gets it)

I can hear you! I was so frustrated that I almost gave up on my super stubborn fids. I have different parrots, but it took me almost a year to convert them, and I'm still struggling with my cockatiel who was an adult when I rescued him and had never had anything except seed.
I got good tricks from this forum - grind the pellets in the coffee grinder and add to the food your bird likes. Another trick is to soak the pellets in his favorite juice or apple sauce and serve that way. And the third trick I invented myself - add something healthy and what they also hate the most into their seed mix (in my case - shredded carrots) LOL And make it like 50-50.
It's a difficult process, but patience is the key.

Oh my god , it took you a year and you didnt stop , your are :emoticonc
As for the first trick do you think it will work if add the grinded pellet to seeds without water or juice ( I think she hate food when its sticky or creamy but I would try apple juice since I used water befor and it did not work

As for third trick I think she would leave what she likes and dont ,and eat the seed only but still I would try every trick in this great fourm

You gave me postive energy to continue:D

I have read it can take months and months with some birds to switch to a pellet.

Angel switched in like 4 days. The owners i got her from (she is 14) said she has never, and WILL NOT touch pellets, they had her on crap walmart sunflower seed/random seed mixture.... In the morning when she would wake up, i would put a bowl of pellets in there for breakfast. Then for lunch i would do a mixture that i got from my safe bird store that she would just kind of pick through. Then at night she would get her normal seeds. I always monitored her weight, it never did drop any significant amount.

Then each day, she slowly would pick away at the pellets...then eat even more of the mixture...and then i would slowly reduce the number of seeds.

Then by 4th day it was no seeds...all pellets and mixture...along with fresh stuff. Now her main meals are pellets, with any other dried fruit/nut mixture i was to give plus any fresh.

I had read about this technique and used it, but also read that monitoring weight is important throughout.

Currently Im using this a similar way , I give fruit at morning and in the afternoon a mix of seeds and pellet as well as night time . I always leave the pellet in cage all time and hopefully she will accept it
Yesterday when I saw eating one piece I encouraged her but when saw that I noticed her eating she left it :31: such a sneaky girl:D

Now that you have seen her eating a pellet, reduce the amount of seeds further. Mine did the same thing, i look out of corner of my eye and she was nibbling on pellet for the first time. When i go to fully look, she drops it instantly! haha....that is when i reduced to almost no seeds. And she was off eating pellets like she had always been.
