New Owner of Congo Grey here.

Just thought I would say hello and introduce myself to everyone.

My girlfriend and I just got a three year old african grey from someone for great deal unexpectedly. He gave us tons of books and stuff for the actual bird that that alone are worth quite a bit. The guy that we got it from had some other very small parrot as well as the grey. Him and the small parrot seemed to get along much better then the grey. Plus he said that with him working two jobs, the grey was getting depressed possibly and just wanted it to have a good home.

My GF and I have been thinking of getting a parrot now for about 4 years so we realize the commitment of owning one.

So I will probably be here asking lots of questions.

What is nice cage that won't break the bank? We figure we want to get him a large cage, something he can have plenty room to play in and on top of.

As for a cage we are from different parts of the world so cage price and places to buy from vary. Where are you located?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations! This is a great community, ask as many questions as you want, we all love to help.

As for a cage, you probably want one that will last for a few years so spending a little more now will save you money later. Allocate a space for the cage and go for the biggest cage possible that will fit. Stainless steel and Powder-Coated are the best choices IMO. As a minimum size you want your bird to be able to stretch his wings out fully without touching the sides. Good luck

In NYC area.
So I read that they need plenty of sleep. I got him covered up in the cage since we got him home at 1 AM after feeding him and what not. I think he may be awake cause I hear him moving around a bit, but not much. When I opened the cage cover a tiny bit to peer inside he was looking right back at me.

Should I uncover the cage even though he may not have gotten enough sleep? I haven't been able to sleep at all cause I have been researching the best ways to care for him so I may be making a little noise that could be keeping him up. I am trying not to though.

This company below sells cages and they are not far away from here, plus the prices seems great so I will go and choose a cage there providing they seem well built.

Welcome! Greys are wonderful birds.

In the US...Avian Adventures are great cages and you can get them online from Petsmart and get free shipping sometimes. They aren't exactly cheap ($300-ish), but they'll last for a long time so you'll save money in the long run.

Personally, I really like Kings Cages...however, they can be pretty pricy, but their Economy line is pretty reasonable and you can get free shipping from them. Bird Cage, Java Wood Perch, Avian Supplies, Pluck No More, Bird Food

Also check craigslist and ebay and check with local breeders. We lucked into 2 used Kings cages through our breeder at very good prices.

A cage is kind of like buying a car...they'll all pretty much get you from point A to point B, but how safely? for how long? how comfortably? etc... Also think of the cage as your Grey's bedroom so he needs to be comfortable in it with things to do.

Either of the ones you have links to should be great. Teh 2nd one (with the play top) may be better since you have limited space. With the play top, that's one less perch you'll need.

We are always happy to have new grey guardians. They are fantastic parrots. Good thing you have the books to read and learn. My Rosie is a timneh grey and has a wonderful cage for the price. I have 3 CAGS (Congo African Greys) One is 14 yrs and two in thier 20s!
They link you provoded has two cages good for greys. PCPT32 and PCPT36. Both are great. I don't like the cages that open up on top as sometimes they are not real steady and the perches fall. Playtops are great.
Ebay also has nice cages. Go for 32x22 inch size or bigger. Smaller is insufficient for a grey.
Are you aware of dangers in the home and toxic foods to parrots? Here is a short list:
Toxic foods: avocado, chocolate, caffienne, onions, saltd foods are bad for them. Peanuts in the shell can contain mold causing aspergullis infection.
Home toxins: Scented was candles, plug ins, cleaners, teflon over heated will kill a bird in seconds.
These are basics and I'm sure others will be around to add to the list.

The kings cage is to narrow and again I don't like open playtops, personally. The other two links won't open for me. Did you check out ebay?

My first cage was open top, its stability is good (it was pretty expensive) but it limits your hanging toy space with I think is much more important. I don't use the open part instead I have a seperate playgym. When I bought my second cage I opted for the playgym top.
