Home one month and gone....

Hi all,
Brought home our CAG on May 2, and he passed on June 5th at 5 months of age. Upon doing the visual only 'autopsy', the vet said the finding/cause of death was inconclusive. Two days prior, Smokey was diagnosed with yeast overgrowth, and was given a Rx to treat. That infection was not even visble in the body on Friday. So. Has anyone had any unexplainable loss? The store is reputable - we had a Quaker from there years ago, as did my Mom and my brother. There's no doubt that this bird was healthy and happy until the week of June 1st. The store owner is going to contact the vet as well as other experienced friends. We are crushed and clueless, and would really like to know what possibly happened before we consider this again!

I am so sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you.
Did the vet also do a full necropsy to see if an answer could be found?
I hope you are able to get some answers, the not knowing is so hard

I'm so sorry about your sudden and terribly early loss of Smokey.

Haven't had a similar event at such a young age; wonder if there might be a genetic component to the situation, or perhaps a reaction to the medicine? Sometimes a basic necropsy can be inconclusive but tissue tests can often yield clues.

Thank you all,
The store owner spoke to the vet and the exact cause remains unknown. There was mention of possible reaction to the medicine, and the vet also said that tissue samples probably would not have offered much more of an answer. Revisiting the time lapse from when he started to appear sick to when he passed, has us thinking that it could have been a stroke. Something happened in his cage during the night after his first dose of medicine. The next a.m. his foot was funny and barely being used. The next day, his foot was fully non functional, as well as his leg. I don't know. We are on the waiting list for another Congo. Not sure when, and certainly not in a rush, but the empty cage needs some life soon! Thanks again. I'm looking forward to this forum! -Kim

Yup. The loss of my 20 year old Noble Macaw, McGee, was an unexpected loss, especially since he died of unknown causes.
Having one's pet die unexpectedly can and does throw its owner for a loop. Being taken by surprise like that is no fun. I'm sorry about your loss, and hope that you go through the mourning process and get another pet soon. All the best to you and yours.
