ok im torn on what to get. I have done a lot of reading about the Eclectus and they sound pretty awesome. i Have had a grey before and he was hysterical. I love that greys are clowns and love to play and mimic a lot of things. Any info would be great, i need to make a decision!!!!! Its driving me nuts. oh and if i get the ecledtus, it would be a male.

I have never had a Grey, but I have a Red Sided Ekkie. Most books say they are quiet birds and they are, but only in comparison to really loud birds. They still have the ability to let out one cracker of a scream. When they are happy they are generally very quiet and 'mumble' away any sounds they know. Trying to figure out and get their complex diet right makes a mess of your brain lol. They are very high maintenance in terms of diet. Ekkies are not real cuddly birds, although I read Grey's aren't either. But they do love to be with people and are generally very accepting of strangers after a short introduction. IMO Ekkies are great birds (as are greys) They probably aren't as good talkers as greys, but they can learn many words and have very funny and cute voices. They are extremely social birds and crave being near people.

Feel free to ask me any questions about my Ekkie and I will try and help :).

Like Ben I only have experience with an ecky - Greys are too $$ here or I would have been tossing up which one to get as well. Everything Ben said I agree with, I have a female and apart from when she was moulting has been pretty quiet as parrots go. Diet is a pain to get right - do heaps of research. I think you should get one of each

I agree with Mel, get one of each that way you won't go bonkers making a decision lol :p, I've had both male and female Eclectus (Solomon Island) as well as a CAG (Congo African Grey) and a TAG (Timneh African Grey), while I love the Ekkies, as mentioned they are higher maintenance than most other exotic birds with special diets as a main concern, greys can be just as high maintenance, more so of time consumption and understanding of their need for intelectual stimulation, my vote would be a CAG, but thats me, in the end the decision is all yours.......:)

What exactly are you wanting out of them? That might help.

IMPO the 2 are WORLDS apart in personality, diet, needs. Eclectus are very high maintenance in their physical and emotional health, which greys are high in intellectual and physical activity.

This is just my experience with 1 eclectus and 4 greys. Love them both to pieces, but ill admit my eclectus worries me to death with her diet and emotional needs. They are such a special species of parrot.

I haven't had an eclectus, but I have a 4 1/2 month old CAG. Feeding her has been relatively easy...she loves everything except cherries. But since she likes everything, I could see how that could make me lazy. Greys also need more calcium than other parrots. Our breeder gave me ground up cuttle bone that I just sprinkle on her sprouts in the morning.

Ruby isn't as cuddly as Jade, our RFM, but she's pretty close. She's missing her back toes on each foot so is a little unstable when perching and I think that might be what holds her back a bit.

Ekkies are a species I would love to have but with 3 birds already I don't think I could give another bird - regardless of the species - the attention and care they deserve.

What a choice? Are you going to rescue or purchase from a breeder? It may be a case of which one you can find. Each kind of bird you talk about is great! I have a timneh AG or TAG and she has been wonderful. Good luck in your search and we look forward to pics when you do choose.

Hi everyone... well ...i read the comments above and i had a experience with eclectus female.... first...i already own a amazon parrot for 28 years and this is for sure a good bird, he talks a lot..have is own temperament some times... but get in to the question: eclectus or grey... for sure a grey for me... a eclectus are quiet in 90 % of the time but when they scream...well..everybody ears thar scream... is very very loud ..like macaws... for eating.. every bird get some messy and its dont make upsad...
About the greys...excelent... they are smart..you got to think every thay: how diferent their cage is going to be for they be active... is a very love bird... veryyy....

Hi there, and welcome to the forum, laranjar. :)

You know, the thread you posted on is almost 4 years old, and neither the OP (original poster), nor subsequent posters, post here any longer. :54: :54:
