Hey guys, Just want to know what is safe to use around birds and on the cage to get the poo off and wipe down the dander from the bars. Im a huge user of windex but im guessing its not bird safe lol. Thanx.

Inside the house I avoid the use of cleaners around the cage. Although I often use warm water with a drop of dish detergent to wipe up any poop. You can also use vinegar water. I have heard of some commercial 'bird safe' cleaners, but I know nothing about them sorry. Hot water works well too, just make sure you dry the area well to avoid bacteria/mould growth.

Every 3-4 weeks or so I take Eddie and put him in his carrier, then I lift his cage up a few stairs and wheel it out to the back lawn. I remove everything from his cage, especially those things that are absorbent like ropes and wood. Then I spray it with some heavier cleaners and detergents (including windex). I scrub everything down till it is squeaky clean. Then give it a quick hose off and let it air for a good hour in the sun (Very important to get rid of cleaner smell).

Hey WC Glad you are here for us. I love your products and am a frequent customer. For cleaning I use a spray of Avi clean. It is a miracle cleaner. For the in-between times I use organic apple cider vinegar. Steam sounds wonderful but I do not have a place to do that. Is it kind of like using a steam iron on the cage? Love your 15% off weekends.

I've heard and been told by vets (many years ago) that regular Dawn dishwashing liquid is incredibly safe and used to clean animals that get caught in oil spills. (I guess there will be truck loads headed to the Gulf soon). I use that to clean their cages and perches if hot water doesn't do the trick.

You can clean the cage using vinegar+water, and i've heard of people cleaing their cages with 10 parts water and 1 part bleach, then hosing it down.

Good point WCP, thanks for bringing that up. People should be aware that if they do choose to hose off the cage, they need to make sure they dry it well with a towel and leave it in the sun to dry. I have never had a problem with rust using this method as I dry it off right away. However, I have had problems with rust around the area where his water bowl is when he splashes it. I am not always there to mop it up. I'm not sure what rust will do to a bird, but imagine its not all that healthy, definitely something to be aware of.

Hey Kay, here is a review of the top 3 non toxic commercial bird cage cleaners, I've used poop off for years, works well and have never had any problems with it effecting the birds what so ever, a little expensive but well worth it, haven't used the other 2 so am sending the review to make your own decision, you can also use Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) also works great, disinfects and is also all natural and non toxic
