Things that spook and things that don't.

It's a never ending learning eceprience with our CAGS (parrots in general). The strangest things seem to make Perjo uneasy while things you'd feel certain would spook her just don't seem to.

IE: vacuum cleaner: Perjo loves when I use the vacuum, and even up close to her cage and when she's out of the cage she doesn't shy from it. Matter of fact she raises her volume to make sure I can hear her over the vacuum. To me she should be scared to death of it. It's noisy, it's a Tri Star so it's dark in color and very long and intimidating looking.

IE: kitchen towel. I came from the kitchen into the LR where her cage is hoping to put a towel on top of cage door, she likes to sit there. It's red with white stripes, and she flew across the room scared to death of this thing. I can't even get it close enough for her to touch and realize it's the same thing she walks on on my coffee table everyday.

IE: big black garbage bag used when I clean her cage, she's fine with.

I just find it all interesting and yet perplexing at the same time.

Any examples of your CAGS with those quirky behaviors?

And FTR this post took 20 minutes to type, everything locks up on me in the message body on this site, this is the only site it happens to me on. Locks ups, unlocks, locks up, unlocks. Very annoying, any ideas why?

I don't know about the spooky things, but I have had issues typing messages in the site as well. On my phone it's fine, but the computer is horrible.

Same here about delays, etc. I just type on a wordpad and then cut and paste.

So true about things that scare or don't. After all this time (and in several different houses), the Rickeybird still loses his mind when he's in his cage, and an "inappropriate vehicle" drives by his big window. Cars, trucks, bikes and bicycles are fine, but if a vehicle passes which is either too big or too small or just not right... like a big city-electric crane goes by, or a golf cart, or a recumbent bicycle passes, he flaps and screams bloody murder. He can be heard all over the house and in the yard... my husband and I just look at each other and mumble... "inappropriate vehicle". Once, a tree-surgeon had a huge lift-bucket or whatever those things are called. It was a huge truck with a two-story high bucket. I couldn't out him in his cage all day, so no errands got done, no shopping, no checking the mail, no nothing.

Haha so true! Nigel doesn't like my red checkered dish towel! New toys are all viewed with skepticism for long periods of time but wandering around on the floor is not a problem! Fickle bird...

Re: Things that spook and things that don't.

I know exactly whatcha mean. Gracie will ride around on the vacuum no problem but don't even try to use a swiffer or broom. She doesn't like the bed comforter stripe side up I have to flip it to the solid side lmao of course the stripped throw in the living room is perfectly acceptable

Big loud trucks are a ok. Motorcycles are fine.
Trash trucks making loud noises. No problem.
Bicycles, scooters and skateboards completely unacceptable lol

Fireworks freak her out. Loud movies with things blowing up thru the surround sound she'll copy and Ohhh & Ahh at like its the best thing ever

She loves her sisal & pink/red/yellow boings. her blue/green/red boing is a deadly snake in disguise

The funniest thing that she seems to not like or that perplexes her is if I wear a V cut shirt or tank she will lean way back & hold my shirt out with her beak like she's either peeking in there or trying to get it off

Never dull .. They sure keep you guessing lol

Re: Things that spook and things that don't.

As for the issues with everything locking up, it may simply be a matter of deleting your cookies for the site. An accumulation of said cookies might be slowing things down for you.

And yes, I know just what you mean with the things that should scare our fids as opposed to those things that do.

Maya used to have an irrational fear of broom sticks. I found this strange because you could walk by her with a baseball bat, a large branch or even a katana sword (sheathed, don't worry! Lol!) without her batting an eye. Weird. I eventually overcame her broom phobia, but it has never made sense to me.

With Jolly, it's brightly painted fingernails! My niece once came by with her nails painted a rather unsubtle shade of purple, and Jolly wouldn't forgive her for the next 7 months! Even after she went back to clear. He was done! He even took it to the extreme of flying around the entire interior circumference of the house to fly to my shoulder rather than simply flying over my niece if she was in front of me! High comedy!

Greys are so interesting. So far, Tsali doesn't seem to be spooked by anything in particular. He seems to only get spooked when I do something really dumb -- like pop a balloon or throw a piece of paper towards the trash and it whizzes by him.

I took him to the garbage dump (we don't have curbside service in the podunk little town I live in ). He was perfectly ok sitting on my shoulder while I was tossing bags in the dumpster, throwing my cardboard and plastic up and into their respective bins. He even let a stranger give him a quick head scratch. Yeah, Tsali, you are such a good birdie!

Re: Things that spook and things that don't.

I cover the cage at night with a dark blue queen size bed sheet, in one big sweeping motion. She isn't phased at all.

I replaced a giant white bath towel on my coffee table with a custom cut piece of glass so she can walk on it without ruining it, and now she won't go near the coffee table. I think it's the glare from the sunlight. She walked on the table prior with no cover (the table is black) then with a plastic cover. Now, no go, for now anyway.
