African Grey Timneh
So timneh is now gaining weight and what seems to be quickly. Going to weigh her again tomorrow to see if this was a fluke. Not sure whether to be happy or concerned. Last weigh in was two ninety five, Timneh stole my nine key. Boy she can pop em off fast. I feel at least its mostly all good quality food shes been eating. Veggies, fruit, Harrisons pellets, nutriberries, Harringtons safflower gold, she doesn't eat too much of this blend but i put it in her bowl for variety during the day. Pine nuts and zupreem fruit flavor blend are new to the diet. She will only eat the harrisons pellets if i grind em up and combine em with veggie mash.

Is it possible some of this weight is muscle? She runs a small marathon on my back these days just hanging out. Shes like a ninja compared to when I first got her.

304 seems small for a grey. Salty is 270 and is tiny compared to Jim's Amy ( a BFA).

Sorry Wrench I forgot to add the back story. So I switched her from peanuts and sunflower seeds and mostly seed diet, and she lost some weight down to two ninety grams, she lost about 7-8 grams. WHere she held for a bit then she went up to two hundred and ninety four last week. Now she shot up to 304 grams. I'm happy but want it to be healthy weight.

There are weight ranges for each species and that information is available as part of a general Web Search. As always, take note of the source.

The muscles that will add notable weight to any Parrot are the Flight Muscles. Leg and neck muscles will add a bit, but nowhere near what you are taking about here.

A change in diet will result in a change in weight and then a steadying.

Always remember to take weights at the same time each day. The best weights are taken in the morning after the first 'dump' and before the first meal. Any other time of the day, will result in very mixed results.

As Al said, 304 really is on the small side for a grey. But from the sounds of it, I guess she just has a really small frame. How old is she? And how long was she on the peanut and sunflower seeds diet?

A weight gain of the type you are describing isn't really something to be concerned about. If it keeps on rising at such a rapid rate, however, that would be different.

And Steven's advice about consistent weighing times is on the money. Otherwise you won't get a true reading on the weight.

Thanks everyone. I weigh her in right after the morning dump before eating anything. For about two months she was at the pet store. She got a huge bowl of peanuts, higgins safflower gold, Kaytees fiesta, and 4-5 nutriberries. They were taking great care of Timneh, she had free range on her play stand and cage all day. She seemed very healthy looking to me, but Timneh is picky with the veggies and its been tough trying to get her on a better diet for longevity. Also I think is was plumsmum that first mentioned vitamin A awhile back and I notice nutriberries don't seem to have vitamin A supplement not any of the kinds. I ordered the palm oil that Owlet's vet had recommended for Lincoln and owlet shared with. Timneh is growing in some new feathers right now. This is an old picture of my scale setup its cheap but it works.

...But no one yet mentioned that Timneh Greys are supposed to be smaller than Congo Greys :). I believe that's in the correct weight range. They are much smaller visually when seen next to a Congo. A medium sized bird. I love the dark color and maroon tail of the Timneh's.

The previous info is still good IMO.

Vit A foods are squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, greens, broccoli, peppers, brussel sprouts, peas, dandelion, apricots, papaya, chili peppers.

IMO she is fine relax about the weight and put that energy into giving and getting her to accept a balanced diet - all vitamins and minerals.
