Introduced myself a while back to get acquainted and let people know we were looking for a companion. Went to several stores and looked at many birds, read 5 books on parrots and greys and watched many youtube videos. We felt that the teen years were not for us and started checking for rescues in our vicinity. My son and I found a rescue within 30 miles and took a Saturday to go on a fact finding mission. We were struck by the number of birds and the condition of them. Having never seen a bird that was almost plucked bare but happy in a caring environment was eye opening. The friendly staff of caring volunteers spending time with these birds was amazing. We told the volunteers we weren't sure if this was for us and we were there to ask questions and learn. They answered all our questions and told us to take our time and look around. We returned home and told mom/wife that she needed to visit. To make a long story shorter after a dozen visits and hours spent holding and talking to "Birdie" he came home last night. He is a 20 yr old African Grey who has plucked but is the sweetest little bird. Will go to all of us , has shown no aggressive behavior to anyone and just talks his head off. the rescue is feathered Sanctuary in Kirkwood PA. and the people there are amazing. What a great group of loving volunteers. A special shout out to Lynne the lady who started this organization for steering us toward Birdie. Will post some pics later. Chris

Welcome to the forums, Chris! Thanks for joining, and much appreciation and respect for your path to becoming a parront. So much to learn, and it is wonderful you recognized the plight of rescue birds. Birdie is so fortunate to have found a caring home!

Ok, the picture thing is alluding me so far but I'll get it. I want to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, it means a lot to a new owner. So far in 24 hrs this bird has learned the squeaky front door sound, the noises of our keet and when you ask it a question like "do you want a treat?" it will reply "Yeah". Too weird ! Turns out he likes grapes , but not the skin, guess I'm the official grape peeler. In my mind it's easier to peel them then clean them up later. Likes carrots, green beans,
clementine orange sections and pasta. Made a phone call also, from dialing to "hello, hey bud , you be careful, Bye" and then hung up with a beep. This is almost creepy! What a great little guy, this is going to be quite the journey. Chris

If you take the pic with an Iphone make sure you orient the phone in your hand as landscape, button to the right, that way they show up properly on the thread.
