Look At Who Came Out!!! MAJOR MILESTONE!

We brought Buzz home last May and once he got in his big cage he wouldn't come out, until today!!!!!! This morning Buzz had been singing but climbing to the door then back to his perch, back and forth so I opened the door. Then he started sticking his head out of the door. I just sat drinking my coffee. It took him an hour!!!! But he took the plunge, jumped out and ran to Venus' cage and is now sitting on her play top. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we'll see what is in store now. It only took him 9 months to get to this point so new parronts, PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE!!!!!!!

We are so proud of you Buzzy boy. ! Aren't you happy that your momma has the patience of St. Stone-istan? Just start to think of all the possibilities you will have once coming out of your cage is just a normal thing. Flying ! Chewing on curtains, woodwork, treat bag/boxes, other parrots toys! Oh my, the bright future your gonna have because of your patient mom. SHE may regret it, but you won't.

I knew buzz would make it!!!!!! I'm so happy for you all!!!

Yaaaaaaaay, freedom! Major milestone indeed, hope Buzz feels empowered and continues his progress.

Thank you so much for posting this. When I hear take it slow with Jasper, I don't know how slow is slow. I try things until he starts to feel uncomfortable. Then we go back to his cage. My family doesn't understand Jasper's fear of going into another room. They make me feel like he'll never feel secure enough to do anything but be on his cage. I still haven't gotten him to perch on the stand I made him. We're making progress. He'll come and sit with me and go on Tillie's play gym. I need to get another desk top one for him. Hers is way too small for him. So when I hear 9 months for Buzz to come out....it gives me a lot of hope with Jasper. Thank you very much!

LOL! Must you point that out? Husband has already asked me that. This morning I left the house and went walking. Gone 30 minutes. Got back and he was still there. I put food and water up there for him, handed him treats to which he just dropped and he hasn't eaten or drank, soooooo he's stuck, lol! Husband said we might have to towel him when he gets home and I told him NO!!! Not after waiting 9 months! We have to go at Buzz's pace. He's gone half way down the ladder towards the food and water then goes back up. I'm letting him work it out, he's got to gain some confidence, like right now he finally went completely down the ladder, sitting at the bottom trying to decide if he's going to attempt to reach the food and water.

If he stays out, I'm rolling his cage outside to give it a deep cleaning. I've been spraying down the cage with him in it, he likes the mist. Then I mist him but I haven't been able to use soap. I use Dawn to clean the cages with. Got to make the most of this opportunity!!!!!

I can't stress enough about patience. Buddy my Amazon taught me that. When I brought him home it took me 6 months to get him to shower and I had to shower with him. Patience can be very hard and I know what you mean about is there hope. Buzz is my most stubborn and cautious bird except for when it comes to food and toys. Right now this is all new so now I have to be more patient so I walk up to him, move slow like handing him treats, putting toys up there for him. We usually whistle and talk to each other. He's very quiet right now so I keep whistling and talking to him to keep the norm. Hang in there!

Patience is really the buzz word.

Perjo while a good little girl from day one has her things she is reluctant to go into feet first, including a dish bowl for a bath, but she gets her baths regardless. Perjo seems most hesitant with new toys that are close to her size, and in actually jumping from where she is to fly when I am actually trying to train her to fly to a spot. She bends down a bit, loads up her legs, puts her wings up a bit, but just will not consistently trust herself. I usually bang my hand on ground to spook her and she jumps and flies and lands fine during this exercise.

Couple pointers for when birds do get comfortable to come out of their cage and explore. Come to grips with the fact they will recognize this new freedom, and most likely figure out that there is a location on the cage in which you the parront will not be able to get them, or do so with ease. Also, beware of the cage door. It can serve as both a fun place to perch (some or tall doors giving them the superiority of height) and a dangerous place to play as they will figure out that the door swings. Perjo figured out how to close the door when she is on the outside of the cage, and move the little safety latch atop the door to keep it closed. The danger is if the are going in and out of the door while they play on it and try to close it, it could bang their neck and cause harm.

Another tip, if you want your bird to enjoy freedom on their own, with cage door open, maybe place some perches on the inside of the door, but keep them waist high as to prevent the sense of superiority due to the elevation. Perjo is a different girl when perched at my waist height as opposed to my overall height (6'5").

You're doing a great job with Mr. Buzz Tracy... I remember when I first got Smokes,she came out of her house right away,but try and get her BACK in??? She'd run,hide,fly...crawl under things,like saying NAH NAH NA NA NAHHH to me

It took her awhile to try anything new,except for FOOD! Once Amy showed her how good it was to taste different things she was all gun-ho about sampling anything..I still miss her every day :31:

Well last night, lots of drama! Nothing too bad, but to bring those that don't know I have a female Eclectus and she is EXTREMELY hormonal right now. Female ekkies have a bad reputation for being very mean when they are hormonal, I have scars to prove it. When Buzz left his cage yesterday morning, he climbed up on her play top and stayed there all day. I was OK with this because he was about 12 inches above the grate where she could contact him. I've been giving her newspaper, chinese finger cuff toys, popsicle sticks, all shred able items because she's trying to nest. I clear them out daily, it keeps her busy. She was fine with him being so high above her cage.

Well last night, I rolled his cage over next to Venus', moved food and water to his cage top and he moved to it. I really wanted him to sleep in his cage and he was getting very tired. I rolled it back to where it sits. He is very skiddish with hands, doesn't want to be touched. For whatever reason, he flew to the floor and went back onto Venus' cage and the Red Devil decided she didn't like it and she went into EXTREME MEAN MODE!!!!! I retrieved my loose perch, it's 36" long and as she went to go for him, I tapped her cage with the perch. She went nuts on the perch! Husband and I got Buzz off her cage (The Red Zone) and got him back in his cage easily. Venus took some chunks out of the perch, she looked like a blow fish, all puffed up and angry.

Buzz didn't nap all day so once he was in his cage, he went willingly, he went to sleep quickly. He was comforted for sure. Venus The Red Devil, well while I was covering her cage, she was attacking EVERYTHING!!! I understand why many do not want a female Ekkie, they get mean and this is definitely the meanest I've seen her by far. I came out unscathed with my extra perch, Buzz was unscathed and she wasn't happy when I covered her. So the Red Devil, aka Betty Crocker is DEFINITELY baking some more infertile eggs. She's a hormonal mess, but Buzz did so amazing!!!!!!!! Great progress for Buzz!!!!! I'm so happy and excited, we've moved over a hurdle!

I'm glad to hear you made it through the night with out any injuries to yourself or the fids. Hoooooray for Buzz.

Congratulations! You guys are an inspiration.
