My baby died yesterday

I read that you need to stay talking to people. He was 19 and I had him since he was 2 months old. He had lost weight, had been treated for thrush and got better, than started going downhill again. I came home from the grocery store yesterday, had bought him his favorite, chicken drumsticks, and he wasn't on his perch and I knew. Was hoping he was curled up in the corner but he was gone. I think I saw his eyes open a little when I started sobbing and told him I love him, how sorry I was. I think I saw his chest rising ever so slightly. I am a total basket case, but little by little with talking to a couple of my friends, with a walk to the drug store, with talking to Jessie's spirit and cuddling my cats, I am going to try to get through this. He was eating, chewing on the drumsticks for a few hours each day, eating some of his regular seed mix, but way too little. I gave him vitamins in baby food, and he eagerly would nibble on whatever I was eating, but he wasn't flying anymore. He was treated for thrush 2 years ago and rallied, looked great, but my vet visit a couple months ago, the vet didn't think it was necessary to again. I don't know what happened, maybe stroke or heart attack. I never loved like I love my Jess. I'm trying.

I'm crying with you. I promise I really am.

I'm so sorry.

Yes, keep talking. Nobody knows more about how much you loved him than WE do here.

You gave him a great home and sent him off with love. I only hope I can do that for my own darling.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Our pets become family members and it's heart breaking when they are gone in this way. Hugs, Eve :60:

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. It is absolutely heartbreaking losing a beloved family member. Allow yourself to mourn and as you and people here say.. keep talking about him and honour his memory. With time it gets easier but the memories will stay with you always. Many thoughts and hugs!

So very sorry for your loss. As others have said, our pets become our family, in most cases more like our children. Their needs are put before our own. My heart goes out to you at this sad time. We feel your pain and we are all here for you. What a wonderful 19 years I'm sure it was with your baby. What kind of parrot was Jessie? Sending lots of hugs.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for your loss of Jess. In time his memories will bring joy and fondness. Grieving for a long-term companion parrot is a lengthy process, but the advice to reach out is sound. Trust me, many of us have been where you are and share great empathy.

Thrush is essentially Candidiasis, a yeast infection. Given Jess's symptoms, it is possible he had a relapse. If the cause will help bring closure, a necropsy by an avian vet may bring answers.

Please know we are here for you.

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. There are no words, and only another parrot person would understand the depth of the bond. Be good to yourself.

Jess was a Congo grey. I'm sorry Jim you went through it and anyone else who did and I wish I'd kept a journal of all the cute things he said like Miss Spaghetti" or when he'd come down from his cage to me on the couch and say Hi Booby in that sweet voice he had. I had a song I made up for him and he'd Bob his head up and down and flap his wings when I sang it. You're probably right about the chlamydia. The first time he did so well with the medicine, a little bit of apple cider in baby food and Sunshine Factor. Had s bad night but it's probably because my good friend who has been helping me get through it is going on vacation but promises to email while in Jamaica. She's going to make a memorial for him in her back yard where her cat and dog are buried. Well just rambling on. Thanks again. Just miss him so bad. Thankful for you guys and friends and kitties and the thought he's with God.

A donation, in Jess's name , has been made to Cornell University's Veterinary program, directed to be used in Parrot Heath studies and related research.

Some of us know exactly what you are going thru, others spared this agonizing time. You have my sympathy - I am one of the former. The memorys of Jess are yours to treasure forever.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I feel your sadness and pain - I really do. We’ve just lost our dear Simba (also a Congo) just a week ago. He was 24.
The wonderful support from members of this forum, as was demonstrated by the previous posts, will help you a bit. Take good care.

Thanks. He died in our arms either of respiratory or heart failure. Two days before he passed away, we found him clinging to the sides of his cage and panting quite a bit. We rushed him to the vet. He was put on oxygen and they kept him for a day and a half. He was sent home for the weekend as he was looking more stable. He died the next morning.

The bond we build with our feathered friends is quite strong especially after so many years.

I hope you are doing a little better everyday.
Our thoughts are with you.
