Pin feather, molting or something else?

Armandito started molting a last week(shedding some medium feathers), he is turning 1 year old on June. Every time I touch his leaf wing(where the new feather supposed to be he screams like a crazy parrot. He is still his usual self, singing and whistling and being a good bird. Does anyone experienced this behavior with molting? should I check for a broken pin feather.

It's common for them to be sensitive. Lots of showers or mistings and good food. In time it will pass, in time! Patience!

It helps to know what species Parrot you have as it defines size.

A one year old Parrot is still a crazy youngster and their ruff housing can result in damaged feathers, pulled feathers and/or injuries of the root of a pulled feather or worst; an injury to the Wing Structure!

The structure of the Wing is long and if you have any more information regarding whether the 'injury' is in the Primary (far outer Feathers), Secondary (mid-series Feathers), or the set closest to the body (which name escapes me at the moment) would help.

Since you did not say, I am assuming that there is currently no bleeding! Please try to carefully open his Wing and look for signs of dry blood - this will also help locate the site of the 'injury.'

Level of Concern, Moderate to High - All requires a fast trip to your Certified Avian Vet (CAV) ASAP:

- Injury to the Feather Root, possible caused by the Feather's force removal, which can result in side loading or twisting the Root. Issues: Painful! Infection of the Root and/or loss of blood supply.

- injury to Wing Bone (crack). Painful!

- Broken Wing Bone. Visible miss-alinement of the Wing. Painful!

- Injury of one or more Wing Surface Muscle(s). Painful!

It would be wise to locate and contact your CAV! A loss of a Feather does not commonly have 'pain' associated with that loss more than an hour after its loss! If any miss-alinement is noted - Move quickly to your CAV!!!

Sailboat, Armando is and CAG 11 months old. The problem is in the secondary flight feathers, no blood, I can see the new fathers apparently they look darker and healthy the feathers position look fine as well. I'm unable to fully open the wing since he screams like crazy if I dare to touch the area. it does still bath his wings when he is out of his cage not so much as usual.

LeaKP I know but I´m a bit worried since I don't know if its his usual "drama" he tends to be a bit dramatic when... he sees something new like: parrots, birds, toys, ropes, etc

PS I forgot bathing(or misting) causes drama as well lol

There's a lot of good information in the CAG and Timneh forum, you'll find a lot of help just clock forums and you'll scroll down to where CAG and Timneh greys are listed.

Both of you know CAG drama and their use of it 100% better than I do.

I am assuming that the Wing opened and was properly alined, and without signs of bleeding, plus we are now well over an hour since the occurrence.

I will leave the issue regarding CAG drama to those with that experience. That said, continued 'pain' (if not drama) is a concern and should be dealt with earlier rather than later. That way the source can be determined, addressed and pain relievers provided as needed.


FYI: The region of the Secondary Feathers is an area that with the area closest to the Body carries the weight of the Parrot in Flight and support the load of the outer Primary Feathers as they and their bone structure cut and flow air toward the inner Wing region during the down stroke of the Wing. A damaged (cracked or bruised) bone in this area is painful and will remain painful for more than a week on the shorten and up to a month of the other. A bruised muscle will also produce pain up to and more than a week.

If you are certain that it is not drama and the pain is still in place tomorrow morning, you really need to have your CAG at this Vet in the Afternoon!

Amazon's can be Drama Queens! But, I have not had one play a drama line when they are hurting!

Good point Sailboat, I agree. Pain, more than irritation and grumpiness with new feathers, needs a checkup.

Appointment made, the vet says its probably muscular but she would take an xray just in case. Ill keep you updated.

So finally back from the vet, armando has a aching muscle. The vet sent pain killers and a calcium supplement. Fortunately no fractures and the pin feathers fine as well.

Thats great news. A little piece of mind can be worth a fortune sometimes. I had a heck of a time getting Timneh into her travel bag for her last vet appointment, well first ever actually.

Actually I asked my sister for drive since his travel cage is quite rusted(Now I know why I need a new one).
Yes although the X-rays were a bit pricey, I happy to know he is fine.

PS Do you have both congo and timneh? When getting armando I thought of getting a timneh but they are quite scarce around here.

I just have a Timneh named Timneh. She recently purchased me last November, and came with the name. Really loving the grey life.
