so very sadly last night I found one of my grey laying on the bottom of his cage. my other grey seems extremely upset and I'm not sure what to do. they have been together their whole life and now at 11 thor is no longer with us. I did come across somebody with 2 greys of their own who says they would take her. I'm thinking maybe since she has been with another bird her whole life it may be best to be around other birds to keep her from getting lonely. I havnt really gotten to a point yet with her either that she openly lets me handle her. so should I keep her or rehome her? R.I.P thor

so sorry for your loss

When you say not openly handle how do you mean? There are many birds that aren't cuddle bugs but relish just being with their owners.

I don't think getting rid of her will be good for you or her. you're still in shock and upset so it's best not to make decisions right now, you could think of this is a sign to get to know her a bit better? What's her name?

For her it'll be very distressing going to a new place, she will think you have just abandoned her in what may be her lowest moment. She will be upset and mourning much like you, they're incredibly empathetic even for parrots. do you know what took Thor? It may be an idea to get a necropsy done on him and to take her to the vet just in case she's under the weather. I would let her see the body, it will help her understand what's happened and not that he just left her. Until you get Thor to a vet (unless you buried him) I'd put him in the freezer to help preserve the body for the vet

Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
I am deeply sorry for your loss of Thor :(

A few years ago,I lost Smokey, the TAG after nearly 30 years. Amy had know Smokes all her life. Amy came to kive with Smokey and I at just 4 months old and she was 26 years old when Smokey passed away.

Amy became VERY depressed, along with me. She wouldn't make a sound, wouldn't come out of her house, and just sat on her nite nite perch for WEEKS.
I have had two birds for nearly 30 years, and WE needed another one! I adopted Jonesy,a Goffin 'too from a friend...that brought Amy out of her depression in days, but I ended up rehoming Jonesy after a year or so (long story) They became fast friends.
So BB,a 4.5 month old cockatiel came home with me about 1.7 years ago..Amy wants to be best buds with BB,but BB is a little lerry of the "big green monster" but tolerates Amy.

I showed Amy extra attention, gave her more lovey time, took her out a lot to help her heal.
You might want to do the same with your CAG.
These creatures know, and feel, and understand love and pain and every other feeling/emotion. You'd be a fool to think not!
Maybe a new buddy is in order, but you NEVER know how the other birdie will react. I'm just lucky to where Amy LOVES everyone and everything ;)

I wish you luck!

Very sorry to hear, so sad. I have nothing to offer for advice other than be as good to your CAG as you can until you make the decision. Sending your CAG off to live with someone else could send that bird into a deeper state of confusion or sadness, just something to think about.

thanks guys. I hope I can be there for dahlia to help her recover and hopefully she can help me recover the loss of thor. she hasn't left the spot he always stood on his perch and its so sad to see her like this. I'm bringing them both to the vet this afternoon to determine cause of death and check dahlia for her health.

I think you can both help heal each other. Like I say maybe try letting her see his body today, let her understand what happened and let her say goodbye. I can only imagine how hard it is for both of you to lose thor. at least he's in Valhalla now with is ancestors

Excellent job on getting a vet appointment. I can tell you from my experience, the second you get a feeling something is up you should act on it. Rio would still be here if I acted on my impulse

I'm still just in disbelieve. I mean the night befor last I could hear him singing and talking like I always do. aside from a plucking problem which he was actually starting to get much better from he was acting perfectly normal.

I'm very sorry about Thor. It's probably too late, but don't put a bird's body in the freezer - the vet won't be able to do a necropsy if the body is frozen. The freezing process destroys the tissue. Wrap him well and put in the refrigerator.

really? I was informed by vets to freeze them  I'll go by your judgement as you're more of an expert than I

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for your loss of Thor. You and Dahlia are grief-stricken, and can help each other mourn and recover. Might be best to avoid long-term decisions such as rehoming for a while. However, a necropsy may be of benefit, particularly for Dahlia.

Read the refrigerator and not freezer is best, wrapped of course. :)

So very sorry for your loss, please do not act in haste.
