3 year old african grey Leo started plucking one of his foot feathers and noticed now its also the second foot as well. he isnt plucking anywhere else. his legs are completely bald any idea? i have a vet appointment tomorrow to do bunch of different testing.

but its only his leg feathers no where else any idea ?

Also he is barely talking not eating or drinking I'm really worried for my little buddy it's killing me inside… its been going on for 3 or 4 days now I have a vet appointment tomorrow morning... not really active or talkative sits on his swing inside his cage he is outside now sitting by me. he ate a little oatmeal that i hand feed him hasnt drink water...

his poop looks normal

as he is sitting next to me he is on one foot falling asleep im heart broken and here and there shaking

nothing changed in or out his cage im just worried sick for my little guy :confused::confused::02::02::02:

I'm sorry to hear this! Maybe he is sick and that's the cause of the plucking? I hope the Vet will be able to resolve all that is going on with him. I hope it's nothing serious.

I'm sure the more knowledgable members will chime in to help. I'm fairly new to the parrot world.

Best of luck & please keep us posted.

Make sure the vet is AVIAN Certified, not just a dog and cat vet. When there is a undiagnosed issue that is very important. Sorry you join us under such upsetting circumstances, but there are good Grey folks on here who can offer advice, but the Vet is the first thing to do.

little amount of yeast found in his poop.......

the vet did further testing blood work, and a culture sample ill find out the results tomorrow.....

fluconazole was given to treat the yeast... but says its not common for the parrot to lose his appetite and not move around at the same time she doesnt believe its psychological ...

so no certain answers yet... and no improvement yet either

I'm glad you've got more information from the vet.

It's good you picked up the plucking now - sometimes if it goes on for too long it can then become psychological but it often has its origins in a sickness.

I hope it works out for you and please keep us updated!
Get well soon Leo!

One thing I have seen about Grey's, they are very empathetic. They pick up on how you are feeling better than other people can most of the time. The best thing you can do for Leo is keep calm, realize you have done the best you can for him taking him to a good avian vet. He will know how upset you are and he will react. Right now make sure he gets a good nights rest and then make sure you get a good nights rest. Tomorrow keep an eye on but stay calm and keep in as normal as possible. If you are scared Leo will be too. Keep calm and spend some quality time with Leo. A positive attitude and a happy bird are Leo's best medicine until you get his test back.

Keep Leo clam, well rested, and happy. It is not only the best for his well being, it is best for your's. It's hard but worrying won't help Leo and it certainly won't help you.

Yes it’s true they pick up on our emotions. They are super intelligent let’s hope this is minor and will pass. He’s still a young bird and should be strong to pull through.

I hope Leo improves, how is his appetite now?

The risk of heart attack is related to extreme stress at the time of blood draw. Not all birds will panic while being restrained, and some vets have better bedside manner to help calm. Leo won't be at risk after the vet visit is complete.

Is the well known vet avian certified? Many vets have some knowledge and equipment and refer to themselves as "exotic vets" but don't have the extensive training necessary for all but basic needs.

so just got a call from the vet..

Leo's blood count was okay
Calcium level was okay

his cholestrol is high from the seeds and the chicken bones that we give him..... so we have to stop that immediately

and we are still treating the excess yeast in his poop

Glad to hear there was nothing more serious. Now you can make the needed changes, treat the yeast and start getting back to normal.
