Does my AG need a swing?

Good morning
I have been looking through a lot of the gallery photos at all the gorgeous birds and have noticed a lot of you don't bother with a swing perch?

I don't see mine on it hardly at all and wondered if perches stuck to the side of the cage are better? I have ordered a java perch for the cage so maybe could do away with the swing? :grey:

No it is definitely not a must, it is just there for fun.

My girl plays a lot more on her bungee rope than what she bothers with swinging.

If your AG do not play on the swing then you can definitely do away with it.

thanks wildheart I may try one of those. Are you in the UK? there was a couple with over 100 tarantulas in their home as pets on the Vet program last night

I am from South Africa. That couple most probably breed them.

Some of us have pets and some of us have household members - family. I am the family kind.

Heh, Cal doesn't like her swing, she prefers a straight rope with wood blocks to swing on!

My AG Mishka loves her swing, spends hours swinging and picking at the wood. When she want to take time out and rest, she goes to her swing.

Everyone is entitled top to their own opinions.........

Swings are more than a nicety, they help your bird keep fit and healthy and help him burn off those extra calories. The movement of a swing exercises the feet and strengthens the leg muscles, helping to prevent arthritis. Balancing on a moving swing also requires use of the chest and wing muscles, areas which need exercise as well. Playing on a swing stretches and tones muscles all over the body.

Whhhheeeeee Mishka!

This is because Mishka knows how good it is for her....I think this bird will take over the world one day she is so clever!!

I think they all love to swing. It's just sometimes difficult to find their "swing of choice" haha!

Cal completely ignored hers....she used to just bat it out of the way. Tut.

The bungee rope is also a swing.

Sterretjie is usually upside down on it.

Are you talking about mishka's rings Ant or what does the swing look like?

I replace so many pieces of her swing each week, she just demolishes the wooden pieces. Mishka loves sitting on the swing, whistling away

What does your swing look like Troy? It is strange that your AG does not like his.

Can you get something similar as the rope or Mishka's swings?

All 3 of our birds love swings and their boing (our name for their bungee). Max has one made of bamboo in his cage that gets replaced from time to time as he usually chews it apart - his current swing only has one side left. Ruby and Jade don't like swings in their cages but they love the one in the livingroom and their boing. They've also taken to sitting on the ceiling fan blades and making them spin, we call it thei Merry-Go-Round.

thanks for all your replies, I like Mishkas swings, the metal hoops look good!
I have the stippled style perch with the big plastic arch attached to it. it seems to take up a lot of room and I never see him on it.

I took it out today and am going to try a bungee and maybe the steel rings if I can find them :grey:

The most important thing is that you give them many different things to perch on.

Gandalf for instance, loved to sit on the open side door (round steel frame) of his Cal Cage. He would nap there during the day after he got tuckered out from playing.

At night he sometimes slept on the open front door (square steel frame). (I only let him sleep "free" like this because he never had night terrors, and never wanted to leave his cage without me.)

He also sometimes slept on his concrete perch or his concrete swing. I guess it just depended on what he was in the mood for, and how it felt on his feet at the moment.

So even if he's not using the swing in a "wheeeeeee!" fashion the way Mishka does, he might be using it when you're not watching...or he might just grow to like it later if you leave it in.

Abby loves her bouncy boing I got her a swing and she gets on the side and chews on the toys that are attached but she does not sit on the perch part.
She is so active climbing all over her cage I am not worried about her not getting exercise. As you can see in my avatar she flaps her wings like that several times a day and stretches her wings and legs like a ballet dancer.. LOL..
