African Grey Timneh
We’ve been having some tough times lately. My Mom has been really sick with pneumonia and the flu. Ended up in the hospital for 5 days. I wasn’t sleeping enough and feeling a bit tired. I have been on a short fuse and Timneh has been right there for me no matter what. Mom is home now and on the mend. Any how Timneh has been flying really wel lately and ow flies upstairs to voyeur as I shower which is awesome she is getting closer to actually taking a shower. When I put her in the water she screamed bloody murder and ran to the shower rail. That was the last time she let me do that but baby steps. So I was in my room upstairs after getting home from work and she decided to come find me. Totally new territory for her in my room. Been in there only a few times. She stays mainly downstairs and so do I except when I’m sleeping pretty much. She got a little spooked tried to land on the bannister slipped flew to the steepest drop slipped off the bannister and went down like a rock. Fell maybe 12 feet a long ways longest fall she’s ever had for sure. She was out of it and stayed just st ding there I screamed and ran for her. She stepped up and I set her on her cage door perch. She regurgitated and just flung it with head shaking. And she sat with her head down with a bit of labored braathing. I rubbed her back and her eyes dilated for a few minutes as she seemed to regain herself. After about 5 minutes she seem to clear the fog and started walking around. 20 mins later she was very hungry and ate a bunch of her veggie dinner blend. She seemed fine after that flew around then we went to bed. She was up wary this morning calling to me and has been her rambunctious little self all day so far. Should I take her into the vet, I’m going to call and ask him in a minute. I fell asleep on the couch for a bit after I played with Timneh this morning. I hadn’t talked to you guys in a bit and felt like I should check in and ask some opinions. Thanks a lot guys sorry for the long post.

This was her fall. I’ve put towels on the railings in case she tries to land there again hopefully she can hang onto the towels better. It’s a temporary fix for right now just in case.

Silly Timmeh! As I'm sure you're aware by now I always say that a phone call can't hurt. Though the fact she's acting he normal self is good, hopefully just a bit of a fright and a lesson to her about how the banister is slippy. Any chance in the corner up there you can put a little tree stand? Could be a good spot for her to land if she's having an explore

How scary for both of you! I'm glad she seems to be feeling better, and am anxious to hear what the vet says.

Just talked to the doctor and he said as long as her mobility is good and she is eating and drinking to just keep and eye on her and if any of those things changes to give him a call back and we would go from there.

Crashs and falls from that height and onto a hard surface is problematic. Sadly, it is part of the fear of having a flyer in the house. Our Amazon, at 500g had much the same experience. Having had a like experience, I can understand your fear.

A serious fall, commonly knocks the air out of them, but can literally knock them out for several seconds. Depending on the fall and the landing, one really wants to be concern regarding broken bones, commonly wings and legs. Clearly when Timneh was able to step-up and was comfortable with his balance, you are able to quickly evaluate his overall condition. His flying since the fall closes that concern.

As time moves away from the event, be watchful of any problems regarding placement /use of wings. Changes in walking, perching, etc... And most importantly any changes in flight, balance, vocal, the position /holding of the head over the next couple of weeks.

Hope this helps!

Glad to hear she is doing better.
Just keep and eye on her and hopefully no issues arise.

Would a wrap of Sisal rope be good to put around the railings?
I would be concerned too about the towels working loose.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I'm so glad your mother is doing better. This has been a scary time for influenza and other illnesses.

It is possible Timneh suffered a mild concussion or the bird equivalent. This is always the possibility as we try so hard to balance freedom of flight vs clipping and a more sedate existence.

Some members have recommended taking a bird by hand and "showing" it every area of their approved territory. Don't know if this might have helped or may in the future?

Enzo - adopted Female CAG circa 2004. A truly amazing young lady!
poor girl, for interest she wasnt regurgitating, she was being sick. Either from fright or a tummy knock.

If Enzo has a fall/fright or knock i will hold/hug her in my arms to stop her moving around and to simply calm her down.

didn't even think of that bigfella! Yes looking at things with the head shaking it does sound like she was sick, though I wouldn't worry too much if she only did it the once. Where she got the knock her equilibrium was probably out of whack leaving the room spinning for her. As long as she's eating and drinking and keeping her usual behaviors I wouldn't worry just keep an eye on her for a couple days
