Wondering what the best practice is for a new bird in your home. Do people quarantine them in a room by themselves or put straight out in the living space? The bird's final destination will be my home office. But for now I thought putting her out where we all our in the summer was a good idea...or not?

She is from a rescue. She has been with a lot of birds and I was told she is used to being moved to different cages. She does not like smaller birds, and I have a conure (I have hoping that is just a reaction to being with a bunch of birds and needing more attention).

I was not sure what key words to search this forum with. I looked for other posts but did not see any on this topic. But likely not searching with correct words...

Any advice is appreciated. I would like this transition to be easy for her. Thanks a bunch!

In an ideal world, a quarantine would happen in a completely separate building with a good ventilation system. The next best thing is going to be a spare room where there is completely separate air from the other birds.... preferably as far away from the other birds and the activity of the house for at least 30 days.

Of course not all of us have the luxury of a proper quarantine so you will just have to do what you can. If you have a spare room away from the activity, that is the best option, preferably if you have a basement and have a bedroom that will not have a chance of contaminating or spreading to other bids air supply. 30 days out of the commotion and a space of their own and with the approval of a vet after a checkup/blood test is done is a good idea.

Yep, my avian vet says he usually recommends 4-6 weeks.

Good advice from our Bean. :)

Oh, and thank you for rescuing a bird! You're automatically on my hero list!

As ITZ mentioned, separate building is the ideal setup. I also have a Conure and an adopted older Grey.
When I spoke to my vet about quarantining, when bringing home my Grey, she also said that a separate building is the only way. Separate rooms does nothing as they area still sharing the same air.

Be careful if you are considering putting your two together. One could hurt the other. I closely watched my Grey going over to the Conures cage. All seemed well until they met at the bars. The Grey bit the Conure quickly. Luckily no damage was done. Watch closely...
