Documenting your FIDs progress

I tend to track Perjo’s health, moods and vocalizing.

In regards to vocalizing she now has a vocabulary of 110-115 words and says over 50 phrases. She’s 3.5 yo now.

Just curious if this seems to be a significant vocabulary for the age? She seems to have a knack for talking.

Re: Documenting your FIDs progress

I have not counted the number of words and phrases my Bella says but it's a lot.
In fact I don't know how to do it. I do keep a running log of everything new she says but.....

for instance.
She learned how to say pretty Bella. But she also says Pretty bird, pretty Wes, Pretty Bingo.

Se makes new combinations of words all the time. They are all words she knows just arranged differently.
I taught Bella to say Red Butt chicken and Red Butt shower. Out of that she made Red Butt Kiss LOL.

It's a difficult thing to count.

Enzo now relegated to 'not the smartest tool in the box' status

I havent a clue how many words/phrases enzo knows, as they seem to cycle over time. I am certain though that we can communicate sufficiently though.

Re: Documenting your FIDs progress

I don’t really keep track, but my biggest talker is by far Tsali, my CAG, who can pick up words or noises the first time he hears them IF he wants to lol. Big IF! It’s interesting to listen to him change his vocabulary as our vocab changes with life, as well as since he came to live with us. He’s 4, and has been with us just over a year. He no longer calls the “girls” (dogs his former owner’s daughter owned, if I remember right,) but he lectures our dog Ranger extensively! He mimics both individual cats, and even mimics conversations that he hears often lol. We really don’t specifically try to teach him words usually though. The exception is that my husband has been trying to teach him “Help! They turned me into a parrot!” But so far he just says “Help! They tuuuuuurned!” His former owner recently reminded me that she taught him her contact info (which he has no told us), and that it would be wise to teach him ours. He also repeats quite a few tunes and experiments with his own music lol. But it’s never really occurred to me to record his progress.

Re: Documenting your FIDs progress

That reminds me that one of the few things Bella still says that must be from her original owners is HELP. It does not come out in her normal "voice" but a tone of voice completely different. It's a long drawn out word like it's coming from a different room.

The funniest thing she does is imitate leaving a message on the answering machine.
it's kind of like "mumble mumble mumble parrot, mumble mumble mumble Bingo...... BEEP" The words tend to change but you always know what it is she is doing.

When Bingo starts getting noisy Bella says "BINGO" before we do ie reminding him he is getting to loud.

The numbers you give for words and phrases sound in the ball park for a normal CAG.

I know some CAG's don't talk much and some only do sounds. It varies allot from bird to bird.

Re: Documenting your FIDs progress

Ive lived with Enzo for 2yrs now, last night she came out with 'What the hell are you doing?' she said this not in any of my family's voice, not in her previous owners voice but in an older ladies voice. This is very likely to be her original owner, so from many years ago. Enzo definitely rotates the words/whistles she uses so i think it would be near impossible to know what she does or doesnt know. One thing I really miss is the way she used to 'ping' me when she wants to know where I am, the same sound, volume and shrillness as a submarine makes..... now i just get 'dad....Dad....DDDDAAAADDDDD, COME HERE!'

They are clever arent they, their cleverness is only surpassed by their emotional intellect I have learnt.

Re: Documenting your FIDs progress

Perjo says some of the basics like Hi or Hello in three or four different tones and cadences all learned from me and how I speak depending on my mood.

If I walk in the door after being gone she’ll say hi with a bright perky tone, if I’m sitting on my recliner at 10pm winding down she’ll say Hi in a much more slow and drawn out way almost matching the mood and timing of the situation.
