Enzo - adopted Female CAG circa 2004. A truly amazing young lady!
Hi there,

I was thinking this last night about Enzo, she uses her beak for communications all of the time and ive sort of just accepted it as normal, but is it?

Here are some examples.

She asks for a drink by making a running tap sound or asks for something to eat by making a lip smacking sound, when i get her what she wants she taps either side of one of my fingers (like Italians kissing both cheeks), this is definitely a 'thank you'

When she greets the 'very' few people she likes, she reaches out a lowered head and when the person puts a hand near her she taps a finger with the top of her beak by her cere. When she greats me however she rubs her beak between my fingers rather than the tap for everybody else. This is like her shaking hands or high 5 id imagine.

If she wants me to be next to her whilst i am busy doing something else she will go all thug mode and bash her beak against whatever she is standing on..... i cant believe this one doesn't hurt her!

There are others but these are the main ones she uses...

Is this normal CAG behavior or just something Enzo does?

Had a Blue Front Amazon. Now have an African Grey (CAG)
Scooter loves to have her beak rubbed, bangs it against whatever will make noise when she's happy, and rubs it herself when she's in her cage.

I know Bella will push my hand away from herself with her beak if she doesn't want me to pick her up. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Andy...I like how observant you are with Enzo:) I never really gave it a thought with Smokey, until now  It seemed that when I asked her to do something, and she wasn't going to do it,she'd "bang" (rather hard lol) her beak on whatever she was perched on,like telling me " NO! I'm NOT gonna do that!" Other times if I pointed my index finger at her,she would vigorously rub her beak up and down my finger..like saying ' HI! how ya doing?..nice to see you"
Interesting observations my friend.

Excellent, its good to see that my observations seem like potentially 'in built' forms of communication with CAGs rather than taught ie natural responses.

Jim, Enzo is a big part of my life as you know, when im at home she is with or close to me all of the time, i really do try and understand her as much as i can as she seems to do with me. Im actually trying to find a motorbike helmet small enough to fit her so she can come out with me lol...

I have actually had Amy perch on the handlebars of my Harley and gone real slow up and down the driveway. His eyes were as big as grapes and he was stiff as a board. I thought he was going to freak out...not going to do that again :05:

Gandalf will stand on the water bottle on the cooler and peck. Like a wood pecker. Not sure why, doesn't do it against other surfaces, so it must be the sound it makes.

I'm also come to learn when he doesn't want to do something. Those bites can sting.

2 umbrella Cockatoos One male named Cooper and female named Baby 1 Little Corella male named Frankie and have 5 Cockatiels three named Male named Pepper, Fiesco for the female and female named Wylie.
They communicate with their beak That normal. Baby will bang her beak down on my arm and yell at me when she gets upset and wants to get a point across. Cooper my male will just hiss at me. Cooper uses his beak to make different sounds and rubs and bang it on things to hear the sound it makes. My Wylie my cockatiel will push my hand out of the way with her beak and also yell when she doesn't want to come down on my shoulder. My Frankie will pull up on my shirt with his beak when he wants his head scratch and a head rub. and they use their beaks for pretty much everything.

Perjo - Female CAG hatch Nov 2015
Perjo doesn’t do much of this. She makes tons of sounds that reaffirm we are communicating but she doesn’t tap her beak or anything. She wipes off her beak after eating though. Rubs her beak on anything to clean it off, she hates a messy beak.
