Gypsy - CAG hatched 18 Nov 2019
Hello,

Just a recap from my post in the welcome thread, I've got my first parrot - a CAG female named Gypsy (4 months old).

Yesterday I had her out of her cage, she was sitting on my hand and I was showing her different things (like bits of plastic, bottle tops etc) and she would pick them up and drop them, just normal stuff.

Then all of a sudden she looked towards the glass door leading outside (it was closed) and she went into an almost trance-like state for about 40 seconds.

During this time she stopped moving, responding to my voice, and was ignoring the things I was showing her. She stopped blinking, her eyes stopped moving, even her foot went limp (the one she wasn't standing on, I was able to touch her foot, stretch out her claws and move her leg around and she did not respond in the slightest).

After about 40 seconds, she started looking around in other directions and within about 20 seconds she was back to showing an interest in the objects I was showing her.

Is this normal? Or something to be concerned about? She hasn't done it since and her behaviour doesn't seem to be any different.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

If she thought she saw a predator it could be an instinctive response.
Don't move and the predator won't see me.

Is it possible she saw her reflection?

They do have amazing eyesight.
What is her diet?
There is a type of seizure that can be like that.....but that is rare.....
She is young and seeing new things, most likely she was focused on something.

I did wonder about the predator thing as that's the only other thing similar that came up when i did a google search. I don't believe she could see her reflection - she was at least 6-7 metres away from the window and I would I would suggest not at the right angle for her reflection to be visible even if her eyesight was good enough. She may have seen a bird fly past though, or seen some outdoor furniture that she may have taken exception to.

I wondered that too, and I just really hope it's not. My 12 year old beagle has epilepsy (he's been having seizures for 11 years) and while we manage it well it takes an emotional toll, especially when he has a bad run.

Edit: Her diet as recommended by breeder is to let her have seed mix and pellets in her cage for whenever she wants them, and for mealtimes (2x per day) I give her thawed frozen veggies mixed with soak and sprout seeds (though my first attempt at sprouting them was not successful, going for round two today). She has the odd peanut for a treat and I'll be using pumpkin seeds for training.
Thank you both for your replies :)

FWIW, my Salty does this once in a while, even while we are in the middle of a trick training session. Just stops cold and is looking at something and then snaps back.

Thank you so much for your responses. I feel better knowing it happens to other birds and is not likely to be a brain misfire :)
