Me and my family re-hommed a 18 year old CAG. He is a bit phobic of new toys etc... His cage is what I would consider a sun conure cage. I bought him a nice big cage. Im looking for advice on transitioning him to it and when I should do it. He has an issue where he gets very nervous around bed time. Other wise he's a happy bird. He does not play really with any of his toys. He loves to shred paper and paper plates. Etc... Those seem to be what drives him to play.
Thanks

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Greys are often stubbornly resistant to change, so consider introducing his new palace in the morning. Place the new cage a few feet away and fill with toys, foraging items, fresh food plus a special treat. Observe the reaction.

OK, so he probably will not fly to it and fall in love! Let him observe the intruder and realize it is not a threat. Gradually bring it closer and watch for discomfort. Eventually, remove his food from current cage and place exclusively in new cage. The goal is never to starve him into submission, just showing the benefits. Be patient, you don't wish to identify the cage in negative manner.

If none of this works, plan "B." Does he have a playpen or other place to hang out, perhaps your shoulder? Place him accordingly outside the room with both cages. Remove the old cage, re-enter and let him observe. He will absolutely take note and hopefully realize the new cage is "home." If none of this works and he becomes exceedingly distressed, may have to consider other options. Other members may share different strategies!
