8 weeks ago we adopted an 18 year old CAG from a man who had to re home him. We heard about him through a family member on Facebook. We visited him about 18 times over 2 1/2 week process. We have had smaller parrots in the past and we currently also have a happy Red belly parrot named
Grover. We were looking to find a female red belly to have in a separate cage. But, fate I guess determined we needed Jasper.

He came to us with a conure sized cage, 3 worn out toys, a puzzle toy, water dispenser, food bowl and the "ball". His former owner informed us that the ball is his prize possession. After a few weeks of reading these wonderful forums we began to realize the ball is a hormonal toy to him. He played a feather plucking ball game all day at times. When we asked his owner about it he said, the ball is his mate and he plucks out his chest feathers, then they grow back in the spring and some years are better than others. This was new information to us.

We got him a new nice big cage and began to change his routine a bit. We weened him off the ball and he no longer plays any kind of plucking game. We have also kept the food bowl however it only has pellets and veggies put it in. Otherwise he must forage through his 6 foraging toys to get seed mix. This is very time consuming for him. Its very satisfying to see him forage all over his cage. He acts more like a parrot now. He sings, whistles, babbles, forages and takes nice long naps now. We are doing our best to understand the mystery of Jasper but, we love it. Thank you for this forum and everyone on it.
