Hello Everyone!

I am a newcomer to this forum and please welcome Kiwi a 5 years old African Grey that I received 10 days ago.

Kiwi has developed a lump under his beak which a member of this forum (SCUBA) was able to treat with antibiotics in this thread: http://www.parrotforums.com/congo-timneh-greys/15581-lump-under-african-gray-beck.html. Since I am in Lagos, Nigeria with very little VET assistance could someone help me with the name of the antibiotic, how to apply it, and how frequently?

Many thanks for your assistance, :)

Bilal

P.S.: Notice how a good boy he was turning his head to show the lump?? :60:

A lump is as possible as it being a tumor or an abscess. The problem is not knowing what it is. Guessing at or using a medication not designed to treat whatever it is, can cause it to become even worst.

With limited resources available it's going to be difficult to define what it is. Do you have a Zoo, or a Wild Animal Reserve that would have a Vet?
Web Search for Avian Medical Professionals, Certified Avian Vets, etc... Some Vets are adding 'online' services, which use Skype or other like video /voice connection.

O thought we had seen this before? To me it could possibly be an injury like a cut, sbd the tissue underneath pushed out..??

Ok I see you linked and we did have same thing before. So unusual.....I'm left baffled...sorry

I hope others can help and your bird recovers

Lol Laurasea, I swear, I saw this a few years ago too! I feel like it was also a Grey. I was thinking that and then I saw your post. Is this the same bird or a new bird with the same issue?

Thank you, everyone! This is not the old bird a few years ago (that was 2012 by the way, good memory) Apparently it is a papilloma growth and can be treated with a tetracycline based antibiotic topical cream. I will try and get the cream as soon as possible to treat Kiwi with it.

In the meantime, could someone advise me on how to spread the cream on Kiwi without stressing him or him biting me? Kiwi will surely not allow me to reach under his beak. How would you guys normally go about it?

Many thanks for your advice,

Regards,

Bilal

Can he take an oral or injected antibiotic? Creams are often toxic if they eat them .
Did you get confirmation that is what this is?

They sell extra long like a foot long , tweezers fir feeding saltwater corrals and fish. They are so useful for so many different things. If you have a place that does saltwater aquarium ?

Also there are giant q tips if you can find them ...or kitchen tongs. Or target train him

Thank you for letting us know what this is

Everyone will likely approach this a bit differently.

I teach our Amazons to perch on my hand and back him/her to my chest, where I hold the beak. At that point my Mrs, applies whatever, where-ever needed.
