Hello Everyone,

Kiwi is a 5 years old Nigerian Grey. Check out this weird behavior that I cannot make out whether he is stressed that my hand is in the cage or happy to see me??

He will not bite me, no matter where I put my hand on him. If anyone else comes close to him, he will surely bite them. So I believe we have established that trust bound?

Many thanks for your advice, :)

Hi,
Kiwi is very thin. What is Kiwi Weight? What does Kiwi eat?

On behavior, to me I lean to just happy interactive behavior.

Oh he loves you! Especially your hand! His wings are out a bit and he's cooing at you. Definately sexual behavior. At 5 years old he is maturing. Looks like you are his "chosen" one. ;)

Yes, it seems to me that he is thin, I feed him a very good mixture of parrot food, (nuts, dried bananas, and fruits, etc..) but I believe I need to start feeding him fresh food like vegetables and fruits right?

I could not weigh him yet because I am trying to teach him to step up and leave that cage.

Thanks for your assistance! Much appreciated!

Thank you Jim! Never knew birds had that connection to humans! How wonderful nature can be!

Funny how I chose him from a whole bunch and he seemed to be the last candidate to pick. :)

Thank you for your assistance!

I only use dried fruit as a treat not as a main part of the diet.

You can feed a little boiled or scrambled egg,
Cooked oatmeal
A little cooked while grain pasta, if you add some chopped steamed veggies you this most parrots will try the veggies better.
Or you can mix some warmed veggies in fresh cooked rice. ( fresh cooked rice only, stored rice grows stuff that makes bird sick)
Cooked sweet potatoes

Fresh stuff is great! If you need a parrot safe veggies list i can find one for you . My parrots enjoy nearly every leafy green or veggies that are considered safe. Peppers are well liked by most parrots and are good source of Vitamin
A. Diversity is your freind.

If you dont have access to quality pellets. Then a mix of seeds needs to be a part if the diet too, squash and pumpkin seeds, safflower, millit, canary grass seed, oat groups and more.

I have a parrot I'm trying to teach step up to as well, and its a slow progress for us right now. But he still gets out of the cage time daily. I make sure the house is safe and quiet, then I let him out climb out. He is clipped but can fly pretty good and glide to the floor. If he flys off ( rare) I wait gill he lands and calm walk to him, he will step up from the floor and i take him to cage again , or you could offer a hsnd held perch. To get him to go back, he target trained . Target training is great and works pretty quickly. But i aldo put yummiest in the cafe for him to go back. Training can be slow and for me I think they need time out of the cage regardless for their minds and spirits.

Also I don't know your birds background.

But her behavior reminds me of the attention starved rescues I used to take care of, rather than sexual.

Big thank you Laura, this is great help!!! Most of the stuff you mentioned are available here and will start on a proper feeding diet.

I am so excited today: Kiwi stepped up on my hand for the first time and was cooing in joy! He gave me a couple of soft warning bites just to make sure I won't drop him. Other than that, we both really enjoyed this exhilarating bounding experience!!

Kind regards, ;)

Look like he trying to get attention. How many hours does he get out of the cage? He looks thin. Is his wings out like that all the time, or most of the days as that usually a sign of sickness, or muscle deterioration? I ask as his wing look dirty like he been dragging them? He doesn't look good.

When my birds step-up,I gently but firmly place my thumb over their toe's,especially when walking around with one of them. It gives them reassurance and confidence that they aren't going to fall.

If you want him to teach him to step up leave cage open so he could come out to explore away from cage. Then put finger, or arm directly in front of chest and state step up while pushing finger, or arm right under chest, so he can associate the word with what you are trying to get him to do. If you are Afraid to get bitten use a perch and get him to step up on that first. You can also distract him from biting by using a stick above him while using your arm, or finger under him to get him to perch on. It best to do this while he away from cage to avoid cage aggression. Move slow not to scare him and award him with treat when he steps up on you successfully. Give breaks in between training him when he gets to stress out.

i dont think thats sexual either, or at least ive never seen activity like that. As has been suggested try him on a different diet, if you eat food thats good for him, share it with him whilst you eat.
