African Grey International Relocation

Hi People,
I'm writing here to see if anybody has gone through this. I'm in the process of moving into the US and I have my african grey for around 10 years now. She is friends with me mainly and family as well. She is close to mom and dad as well. since the move is international, the US requires the greys to be quarantined 30 days along with the international travel ( close to 15 hrs ). from my research, I've seen that you can take your grey with you on the flight (under the seat), which is my preferred method. Though I'm really concerned about the 30 days quarantine. My grey is used to be out for at least 3 hours a day playing with people and things around the house. This is causing me headache and hesitation on how to proceed. I hope I can get any feed or if anybody had any experience transferring a grey from a country or gone through a quarantine process.
Appreciate it.
Thanks,
m_y

International travel with a Parrot can be demanding!
- One of the most important things is where are you coming from and the requirements of your Country regarding the export of specific Parrots.
- Medical History, is very helpful as it works to prove ownership as does, having your Parrot microchipped.
- It is also common that your parrot is home quarantine under the over-sight of your Avian Medical Professional. This is commonly 30 days prior to transport!
- That medical Document commonly offset the need for a 30 day quarantine, once you arrive in the US.
- Note: The above assumes that you have defined and will be visiting a US based Avian Medical Professional, titled as a Certified Avian Vet (CAV) upon arrival.
- The most important part the Documentation Requirements and Flight Requirements of the Airlines. They will likely ask you to complete documents required for your country in addition to the USA. NOTE: You will likely need to visit the US Consult to get the needed documents. Also possible to get it from the Website. With all that stated, the most important part is that meeting all the requirements of the airlines.
- WARNING: The Covid 19 Virus Restrictions are continuing to change and depending on the Status of your Country and the US 'At The Date of Your Flight!'

If you plan to make this trip in the next 45 days, you have a ton of work to complete in a very limited time. It is not uncommon for the documentation and approvals can take up to 90 days!

thanks for the quick response, i have time to arrange the travel. my main concern is the bird. i'm not sure how the bird can handle the travel ( even though i think it wouldn't be bad as the bird would be flying with me ). my main concern comes from quarantine in the US ( i'm not sure the pet would be able withstand the quarantine, as during the quarantine, the way i understand it, is that the bird would be caged for around 30 days and i'm not sure how that shock would do to the grey. especially if i put into account that the bird is used to being out of the cage everyday. scared that might cause my grey to pluck its feather, etc.
Thanks again

Welcome m_y.

You might consider experimenting with an elevator. Take your Gray with you on an elevator and gage his reaction.

My bird struggles with it. Doesn't understand it.

That is truly a great idea my good friend provided above! All of our Amazons have been road warrior and occasional elevator riders and never had a problem with either. Thanks for adding that comment!!!

Would a home quarantine void the quarantine all together?

I’m interested in this as I was looking to potentially move to Hawaii and I saw there mandated quarantine.

Do the requirements state home quarantine or specifically cage quarantine? If the word cage is not included it would not apply, in my opinion.

State Law need to be researched as there is variations in enforcement and one could easily mis-step or out and out error the Law. That said, one ends up never knowing if law enforcement shows up at your place to make an example.

as for elevators, my bird comes into an elevator either on my shoulder or in his cage with no issues. first days, it was scared, but no issue at all anymore, actually she knows that if someone is going into the elevator that means they are going somewhere so she would run to get into it.

as for my country requirements, there is a 30 day quarantine that can be done at home, so that shouldn't be an issue.

in the US is the issue i think, my bird is not defined as a US bird i think.

I'm going to start communicating with the authorities here, but wanted to see if anybody had done it before with their birds.
