Meet: Name Unknown

After a few years of thinking about it, and reading about Grey's we decided it was time to get one. We will be bringing him/her home in a few weeks, and very excited. (We should know soon what sex it is) I was told by the breeder he/she has some red on his back, I don't know if it is enough to be considered Red Factor or not.

We are new to the world of grey's. I am owned by a blue front amazon, who is clownish and sometimes a bit crazy. :) And also my oldie, but goodie 30+ yr old Ringneck. He's a super active little guy, and into everything.

I hear a lot about grey's being shy, easily scared, and sometimes neurotic. I have also read NOT to give them a routine, because if you change it, this could cause stress. Everyday is different in my house. We don't have a routine, well that's kind of a lie. Water and food gets changed right away in the morning. So would you say this is going to be a good thing for the new guy?:green:

The best advice I could give a grey person is to expose your bird to something new every day, no matter how little. I take Rosie around my apt. often. She has a fear of the laundry basket of all things. Still working on that on a daily schedule. That way when there is an unusual event the bird will be used to new things and people in the home. I take her for walks in the hallways of the apt. to see and meet new people for socialization. FYI I have heard that greys only get along with other greys. Have no idea if this is so. Good luck and enjoy!!

Congratulations! Greys are my favorites and my Ruby is an absolute joy. I'm not as good at introducing her to new things like SB is, but we're working on it. Especially work on socialization with all family members.

As for them only getting along with other Greys, we haven't had any sign of that. Ruby loves Jade. In fact, the other morning, I let Ruby out of her cage while I was getting birdie breakfast ready. Jade usually comes out at this time, but I decided to give Ruby a treat. Instead of staying with me and "helping", she sat on the door of her cage which is right next to Jade's cage and coo'ed to Jade. As if she were appologizing for being out when Jade wasn't.

However, she isn't so fond of Max. They don't fight, but they aren't friends.

Thank you for your input. I am very excited, but at the same time a little nervous. One of the reasons I wanted a baby was because of their shyness. We have a pretty active house. This baby will be exposed to many people and many things. I am hoping my very unshy amazon will help out. He could entertain people for hours. I know the breeder says she starts exposing them to things even before they go home, like the vacuum. Something she says Greys can be afraid of.

HRH Di- When you talked about Jade and Max not being friends it made me giggle. My Amazon, Bean, and Ringneck, Chico, are the same way. Chico is the old man and Bean is like the naughty teenager. Although Bean is bigger than Chico, Chico is still the boss. They don't fight, but you know the little guy is top dog.
