GCC Louigi AKA "Loopi Lou"
Hi, im new to this forum i have a GCC conure that i have had for about a year now, but im still a little puzzled as to what to feed him. I took him to the vet, and the vet told me that he was under weight, & that i had to feed him more veggies and less fruits. The thing is that he wont have any veggies besides carrots, he loves strawberries, apple, banana, walnuts, almonds,he also has a cuttle bone in cage & he has a regular diet of pellet food. Is there anything that i can do different? And im pretty sure that his feather banding is also due to lack of proper nutrition:confused::rainbow1:

To get him to try more veggies, you can try eating them in front of him. If he sees you eating something, he may want some too! :)

How much does your bird weith? My cricket only weighs in at 62 - 64 gms. It is good to have a bird scale so you can tell if there is wt. loss.

I have actually done the eating in front of him,its a great suggestion and it kinda worked, he tried the spinach and he kind of liked it, i think he would probably eat more than just a bite of it if he didnt have so much to choose from. And he weighs 67gms, my vet told me to give him monkey chow, idk but that sounds crazy lol.

I have to stress that Conures do need a small amount of healthy seeds as well. Conures do eat seeds in the wild and even though in captivity they are much less active than in the wild, they still need to have some in their diet. Sprouted seeds are great! Have you tried sprouting????

Here is an example of what I fed Loco this morning, he's got a smorgasbord!

IMG_1550.jpg

He's got a sprout/seed mix which has been soaked, apple, capsicum (bell pepper) carrot and peas.

He also has another feeder with pellets all the time for him to snack on.

He was fussy at first but give your bird time. Bring him to the dinner table and he'll want everything you have, Loco sure does :)

I give him nutriberries and he really likes those, and im definitely going to try to feed Louig the way Loco is being fed, that sure looks like a delicious dish. Thank you to everyone that posted a reply, sure helped alot:)

Sprouts are the things on the left in Loco's dish. They are simply seeds that have been germinated. You put them in a dish, pour boiled water in then leave them to sit over night. Drain the water then pop them in the Fridge. They'll germinate slowly. They should be used up before the sprouts have time to turn green as this can be toxic. Pretty simply though, I've not seen them last that long yet :D

I swear by the 'clicker'. When my Benny hears that click, he expects a treat. I'll take that opportunity to add to his diet. Scrambled eggs, spinach, broccoli, etc... He may beak and then drop the newest addition to his diet a few times, but after awhile he gets to like it. We're always adding!

I was having roast beed for dinner last night, Loco loves it! He's a big scrambled eggs fan also. He doesn't seem to like broccoli so much.
