I saw a few articles discussing this during my research of what type of bird to get, and they weren't very clear and I didn't have my questions answered. I was hoping you guys could help me :).

Can you compare them on:

Noise level
Personality (playfulness, nippiness, etc)
Which is more cuddly and affectionate? :D

All I know is the differences in physical appearance and that they're both loud birds lol. I just want to know what else sets them apart. Thanks!

sun conure i'm currently calling him lancelot.
sun conure (ours)- quiet if paid attention to, LOUD when ignored/ or if you are a loud person.
ours was quite nippy when we got him but through attention and discipline he hardly does anymore except when he want s to try to push you around a little ;)
he loves to cuddle - gets up by my neck, wuzzles hair, etc... he is sweet.

IMO there the same. I belive there the same species Some will argue otherwise.
But noise level the same. I think suns are more frequent.
Both extreamlly affectionate. And cost the same. Lots and lots of similarities

Awww he sounds like a sweetie pie :)! Are they loud if there are other birds? I also have a tiel and a couple budgies, so he'll never really be alone.

Suns more frequent - that is very helpful! And in my experience, I think suns are a little more than Jendays, but I guess it also depends on where you live. They are definitely very close in price. Only about $50-$100 difference.

Really? I've only seen one gold cap for sale in my area, and the lady was selling him for $250. She was also selling a Jenday, and I watched the youtube video she linked in her ad but they didn't look too friendly :p.

Lol ain't the case always haha. Never look friendly. The whole feed and not play feeders. With my birds I bred and raised. I always spent loads of time with em. And they always loved there new home. Loved people. It seems now those are hard to find.

Yeah, very true. That's actually exactly what they were doing! The man was offering them a piece of apple, the Jenday took a few bites but didn't stick around, the goldcap just tried to get away and didn't want any apple at all!

I think I might want a Jenday. I never heard one scream before so I looked it up on youtube and I found this video:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn2l5Rn14fI&feature=related]YouTube - ‪Marley & Cera Sun/Jenday Conures Part 7‬‏[/ame]

I can definitely distinguish a sun conure scream without even seeing one. They just have that unique scream, you don't need to see one to know it's a sun lol! But the Jenday that's screaming/squawking is like nothing compared to the sun. It might be a better choice for me since I don't think my family will like the screaming. A Jenday squawk won't bother anyone though.

Sprite the cinnamon green cheek conure.
It was actually $995..... that breeder also has a B&G for $1095... so a macaw and a gold cap are $100 apart? Weird....

I have Conures mixed up with Tiels and Budgies and the noise level or amount is the same alone or if they are around. Now putting 2 conures alone I don't know. I have them all in same cage with still plenty of room.

Yeah, that is weird! And I think in my other thread about deciding what type of parrot is best for me, I linked a gold cap that was for sale for only $200. Talk about a price difference!

Well are you talking about small conures or Aratingas? :p With a sun conure, you definitely won't get mixed up with tiels and budgies! With the GCC I had though, my budgies were definitely noisier and the same volume. My GCC was very quiet. He only screamed when he was in my room by himself. Sometimes when I put my hand in his cage and he didn't want to step up, I just say "Okay suit yourself!" and I go downstairs without him. Then after a while he'd start screaming lol, but it was the same as when my budgies started kak-kak-kak-ing. No louder than my budgies.

Suns and Jendays are considered one species that's starting to split in it's natural range. It's very hard to explain without going into the details of spe******ation and adapting to environments, reproductive isolation and how new species are formed ect, but try to think of it as this. A dog and a wolf are both canines, can and do interbreed when they encounter each other and have fertile offspring so are still technically still of the same species or very very closely related species (just like how suns and jendays can mate and produce fertile offspring. Fertile being key here) , but due to different conditions (n this case, domestication, in the case of suns and jendays, different environments), they are different. They all belong to the species of Canis lupus but Domestic dogs are a SUBspecies of that species. Domestic dogs are Canis lupus familiaris (and C.L dingo) both of which are offshoots of Canis Lupus.

If natural selection and evolution was allowed to happen for a few thousand years, eventually both types would continue to adapt to their environments and become so different they can no longer interbreed (usually they are separated by say a mountain range and cant get close enough to swap genes or one group of the original species is swept away in a storm and colonises a new area where they are separated from the original group etc) and should they come together again they are no longer the same, no longer can breed together (or produce fertile offspring together, horses and donkeys can breed together and have foals, but the foals are infertile) and hence are now separate species as their genes are isolated from each other.

It's very hard to explain unless the person your explaining to has a good basic knowledge of biology and evolution, so I hope that made sense! The lines between species are not as clear cut at "thats a dog, thats a cat" sometimes it is "Their both different, but not different enough to be separate!"

But onto suns and jendays!

Jenday conures are known scientificly as Aratinga jandaya and sun conures as Aratinga solstitialis but both belong to the Aratinga solstitialis complex which includes the: Jandaya Parakeet, Golden-capped Parakeet, and Sulphur-breasted Parakeet. Usually these three are considered sub species of the sun conure (like how the domestic dog above is a sub species of the wolf, it's parent species) but some think they are separate species, and some people think Sun and Sulphur-breasted Parakeet are the same species, and the Jenday Parakeet and Golden-capped Parakeet another species. Regardless they are all part of the Aratinga solstitialis complex which means they are all closely related and in the wild can (and do sometimes) still are capable of breeding with each other and producing FERTILE offspring. Think of sunday conures!

As for temperamental differences between sund and jendays? Both are LOUD. The lady I got Alex off has two pairs of suns, and in my experience with them they have a shriller, more piercing call then the jenday, although they are both the same volume. Apart from that the only real difference I have encountered with them is colour. Alex (and his sister who still lives with his breeder, Im good friends with them so I see them often) are calmer then their suns and less excitable, but that's just my observation.

So I guess suns are abit prettier with all the yellow, but jendays are a little less ear piercing (its still pretty bad) so take your pick! They are both very similar.

Wow that's so cool!! I vaaaguely remember that stuff from biology in my freshman year of high school lol. It definitely rings a bell and I know what you're talking about, but we didn't go that in depth with the fertile and infertile offspring. But anyway, that's really cool! I think I like suns more because they're brighter and more vibrant, but jendays are also VERY pretty. It's a hard decision, but I think in the end I'm still going to go with the sun. No bird is ever going to replace them as my favorite :). Unless they're the same but quieter lol! I'll be getting a baby though, so I'll be sure to train him early to be independent and entertain himself while I'm gone. In the research I've done, there are sooo many solutions to tackle screaming!

I have a jenday and it sounds just like that sun on the video lol. My friend has a sun and I believe they sound the same when they yell but both great birds.

Both Sun and Jendays are equally noisy in comparison. They're beautiful and all, but not for me. I have Parakeets, Cockatiels, Macaw, Cockatoo, Canaries, and a pair of SI Eclectus. I don't find my birds noise level as comparison to Conures at all!!! As I used to have a Jenday and a Nanday, they drive me up the walls with the scream ALL the time...lol....People around here tries to hand me off their Sun and I decline them every time!!!!! Every so often people would ask me if I want to take in a macaw and I still decline as my house is full already....lol....Once people know you have birds, they will come knocking!!!!
