kaleb possibly has lice?

is it possible that my 3 month old green cheek could get lice? last night he was scratching a lot, and we think that he might have lice. if he does have lice how can we get rid of it? should we trust the stuff they sell at the store? thanks for reading

Re: kaleb possibly has lice?

Unless you are experienced in dealing with this problem I think the best way to be sure you have a mite problem is to have an avian vet exam your little guy. Mites are very difficult to see and come in different colors. There are lots of products out there for mites but can you use them on a young GCC and if so how much? There may be people on the furum that can give you advice but I do not know of any members with an avain vet certification.

Mites and Lice

All you need to know about lice & mites in the above link.

First of all if your bird had red mites you would see them & feel them crawling on your skin. Lice are bigger so are seen easily however there is a very small feather mite that is barely seen with the naked eye & these little sods can cause problems. But a mite spray from your local vet or pet shop should fix the problem if it exists. I actually use a product called Pestene & is in powder form.

Apart from mites that can cause discomfort for a bird they also don't like us messing with their feathers. Have you ever noticed when you handle your bird & then pop it back on its perch it will spend the next 30 minutes preening, cleaning, scratching & putting their feathers back into place. Another reason for a lot of scratching is if your bird is going through a molt.

Lice are visible to the naked eye, so look closely at your bird's skin. The lice are dark looking & you can see them moving.

when feathers come in, they scratch like crazy!

bath bird to help soothe its skin

personally as your bird is so young, i'd take it to the vets to have it confirmed an use medication for the mites as directed
