Should I leave food in the bowl all the time to let Captain pick at it when he wants it or should I feed him only once a day and give him little treats throughout the day. I have read so many different thing and it's confusing.

I forgot to mention he doesn't eat any fruit or vegetables when I try to give it to him. I've tried apples, grapes, blueberries and strawberries. He just won't eat them. I also tried carrots, broccoli and tomatoes with no luck.

What I usually do with my birds is give them a separate bowl of people food (veggies, fruits, pasta, or whatever they're getting that day) first thing when they're good and hungry. Plus, they like to eat breakfast with me, so they grab whatever is in the bowl.
After they've eaten (or not) , I give them another bowl of pellets so they're not hungry during the day while I'm at work.
At night before bed, they get their treats.

I leave the pellets out all day. I have a separate cage for sleeping and I don't put any food in her sleep cage, just water. I put out veggies in the a.m. (in a separate bowl), but she really doesn't eat them in the a.m. and I feed her veggies again in the p.m. I give her fruit throughout the day. You'll have to experiment with everything you can think of to find out what they like. Also I happen to own a princess who will not eat raw veggies, so I have to cook them for her :20:. Also my princess is very picky. One day she will eat as much cauliflower as I can give her and then she may not touch cauliflower again for a week. I constantly have to change what I give her from day to day, as she prefers different things everyday. Also birds seem to love peas and beans. She has yet to turn down a pea at anytime. My princess wont eat strawberries either, she will eat the green part of the top off and throw the rest away.

I leave the pellets in his cage all day, and a bowl of water, and a bowl of fruit or something else (I have frozen parrot food also).

When I'm eating a meal I prepare my food and if it's something bird safe I give him a small portion in his own dish (I got him his own little dishes) (or sometimes I let him sit on the edge of my dish and eat stuff). If he sees me eating he WANTS SOME TOO!

If I'm eating something that's not bird safe, I give him something that is, while I eat my food. He seems to be happy with this also.

I'd be sure to leave him something to nibble on all day though. They need to eat a lot more often than us. One time we went on a car trip and were on the road for 2 hours (LA TRAFFIC ICK), and around the second hour he started screaming and throwing a fit, and I couldn't get him to stop. When I got to my destination, after he still wouldn't stop, no matter what I did, I realized he only had water, not food. I gave him food and he pounced on the food dish and all was fine. I sure learned my lesson!!

oled - Could you leave more pellets? I don't think I've ever had a bird that would eat more than it needed. You might need a bigger dish if he finishes them too soon.

Must be a missunderstanding. I have plenty of pellets in a big dish and for Polly that is not a problem
