I like the playtop on my cage and i'd love it if my bird could use that as his primary play stand (i'd probably get a portable one too) but I read that if you have your bird use his cage playtop a lot, he will get cage bound. Is this true??

I don't see why it would for the average bird? I don't have room for a play-stand so Alex's toys are on top of his cage. He's more then happy to leave it at any time.

One Green Cheek Conure: Tori
Tori has a playstand on top of his cage, and he spends a lot of time playing on it, but he's not cage bound. When he gets bored or just wants company he flies around until he finds one of us to hang out with. He's so silly! when ever he finds someone, he'll land on their shoulder and say "Wucha doin?" XD

If i am letting my birds out first thing in the morning i will get them to step up and give them the morning lovin. Then let them step down to the play top that way they don't get nippy thinking that the can just run out of the cage to the play top when the door is opened. Have not had any problems with them becoming cage bound. So go ahead and let your fid enjoy the cage to the fullest.

YAYY!!!! He will love his play gym :)
Another question; the crock that fits in the playgym has some cracks that were glued together. The person I got the cage from said that she used it, but doesnt it harbor bacteria? Will it be okay to keep treats/food in?

I use one of my cages with a playstand on top for all of them to play and interact on. If they want "people time", they will hop down and run around to find me.
Some days, they all follow me around and some days they're happy to be playing together on the cages.

I've had birds spend a lot of time on top of their cages, but they were always happy to leave when they wanted to.
