Had a Sun Conure
HI, Im a new member but not new to owning parrots, or conures to be exact. My sweetheat Wally passed away last week. He was a Sun Conure and I loved him very very much. I'm not sure if I can handle getting another Sun to replace him so I'm considering other breeds. Seeing another Sun in my house would be a little too bitter sweet :(
I am considering a Green Cheek/ or a cinnamon GC, a Caique or really any other similarly sized bird, parrot, caique or even smaller macaws. What's important to me is personality, Wally was very cuddly, affectionate, talkative, playful, funny and adorable. All traits I would want in another companion bird. I would like a bird that likes to cuddle, talk, that laughs,(do other breeds besides Suns laugh? Wally would laugh out loud along with anyone in the room who laughed) likes affection and is playfull. Maybe I just need to get another Sun, but are there other birds like this that are maybe not a freaking LOUD as he was or have the these same traits but in spades? thanks in advance for all your help.

Ive included some pics of my dearly departed...

I think you would like a hans macaw if you want a friendly macaw and one that can do tricks or maybe a cherry head conure . I have a friend who just got a cherry head conure and he is the biggest baby and sweet heart . Good luck with what ever you decide and I know that you are probably still heartbroken about wally but he would want you to go on and live and give another baby a home .

I would suggest a blue crowned conure like my avatar. I think you would love them, and yes, my Alex laughs.

i have heard some mini macaws are a little nippy but the storries i hear of them make sound so intellegent and loving.as far as conures go i would also suggest a blue crown, and caiques are just a ball of fun and energy that might cheer you up :)

Anyone have any experience with a Mitred conure? Would the match the description of what I'm looking for?

You'll get biased answers in the conure forum. ^_^ I adore my blue crowned conure. He's cuddly, he's a clown, he's quite a busy body, chats up a storm and adores music. They have good temperaments and, while one of the larger conures, they are also quieter than smaller breeds I've read. I know this is certainly true compared to suns I've cared for in the past.

My blue crowned not only laughs with people, he'll also laugh at things he personally finds funny I believe. And when he's being dramatic, he does a vaudville villain laugh (we have NO idea where he picked that up actually! But its hilarious!)

That's awesome. Sounds like the kindof bird I'd like to have. A villainous laugh from a conure!? I love it

My Alex laughs at things too. I'll say something, he'll laugh and say "You're fuuuunnnnny"
Also, he's not a screamer. Sometimes he screams when he's playing but it's nowhere near as loud as a sun from what I've heard of suns.

I'm still curious about these mitreds, and how they compare to blue crowns

Have you considered a Jenday conure ? I am really happy with mine. They might be a little to close to a Sun for you, as from what I understand juvenile Suns and Jendays are very similar in markings.

I have conures, GCC, Suns & Crimson Bellied. I also have Hahns Macaws. I would pick a Hahns any day. I should mention they can be loud at times & nippy but that is due to them not wanting to something I want them to do. They are a lot of fun great little talkers. I don't spend a lot of time with my pair as they will hopefully be future breeders but from what i see with my 2 the potentional pet quality is certainly there.

My best friend has a caique and he's one of the coolest birds I've met (I'd even say he's cooler than my conures and I love those two) he's friendly to everybody, loves to play with toys, and talks up a storm. I have a sun and a dusky. My dusky is a tad smaller than my sun and seems impossible to potty train unlike my sun. She's a pretty neat bird and a total snuggler. I'd say go see all the different breeds and play with them and see what size you like and how they act. You won't know until you shop and you may find your dream bird when you go "shopping".
