Need help with a cage asap- bar spacing.

Alex's current cage, while nice, is quite flimsy, I need to replace it asap.

I'm getting mixed messaged from researching bar spacing for a jenday conure. I've found a cage I LOVE, but the bar spacing is 2.5cm (Just a tad under one inch) you can use this site to get an accurate measurement if you're more familiar with inches. iRuler.net - Online ruler

Now, some sites say up to one inch for a sun/jenday is ok, others say 3/4 max, others a bit more, others a bit less. I guess I jut need a definite answer. Could a jenday fit their head through a 1 inch bar spacing?

Heres the cage in question. My room is full of antiques and this would fit in nicley, but obviously not at my birds expense! I do not believe it is manufactured in a smaller size.

So, 2.5cm bar spacing for a jenday, yes or no?

Thanks!

Re: Need help with a cage asap- bar spacing.

I should mention his current cage has 2cm spacing. It's a nice cage, but I feel he needs something much larger. I plan to use the current one as his sleeper cage, and the new one out in the lounge when we move to our new place (share housing right now)

Edit- https://www.birdsupplies.com/Articles.asp?ID=254 Bar space should be 5/8" to 1"
And- http://www.ehow.com/how_4473628_choo...un-conure.html The ideal bar spacing for sun conures is 3/4 inch, but 1/2 inch or 1 inch is also acceptable.
And- http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww25eiv.htm Be sure that your chosen cage has the correct bar spacing (3/4" to 1")

But then their are thing like Yahoo answers (which I don't trust anyway) Saving 3/4 inch max http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...8155849AAWWWSA

And I am yet to find a story of a sun or jenday getting caught in a 1inch spaced cage.

Re: Need help with a cage asap- bar spacing.

That is the cage I have for Merlin.

Technical Details
Height: 162.0 cm
Width: 66.0 cm
Length: 50.0 cm
Inside Cage Height: 98.0 cm
Weight: 25.0 kg
Materials: Avilon powder coated steel
Colours: Stone, Antique
Brand: Montana
Bar Spacing: 15.0 mm
Accessories Included: stainless steel feeder cups and perches
Warranty: 12 Months

He has no issue with his cage whatsoever, can clamber about and can fit his beak through the bars, but not a chance would get get stuck. My only 'concern' is that if I took the grate at the bottom out hat separates him from his poop, he'd be able to squeeze/get stuck trying to wiggle out that way. I avoid that by keeping the grate on. :P

My bad, I'm terrible with numbers. Apparently your 'new' cage would be 1cm wider? I'll hunt for the cage that Merlin was kept in at the breeders and see what bar spacing that was

Re: Need help with a cage asap- bar spacing.

Merlin was kept in a cage with larger birds, such as Greys/Amazons and the bar spacing was 'around 31mm'. Often some of the smaller birds (sennies mainly) are kept in with the bigger ones with no problem about bar spacing. Guess someone else might be able to help. Is there not a chance you could 'visit' a similar bar spaced cage with your Alex and see how you feel about it?

Re: Need help with a cage asap- bar spacing.

Amber, I have a cinn gcc and the cage I originally had him in had 1inch spacing. On the second night I heard him croaking and looked over, the little ratbag was happily sitting on top of cage as proud as can be. Put him back in cage and watched where he was getting thro, it was the roof. Needless to say, he got a new cage the very next morning. I have a dog and 2 cats and he needs to be safe. I dont know if your conure is bigger or same size, just giving you my story, hope it helps.
PS: I will say, if you can get this cage in smaller spacing, I would. If Alex is bigger, he will still be able to get his head through, I would imagine, and that in itself could cause him some injury or even death, should he get stuck or slip off perch.

Re: Need help with a cage asap- bar spacing.

Thanks for the input birdybabies. I've ordered the cage, if it doesn't work I'll just sell it and get a new one.

A Jenday is the same size as a sun, GCCs are a fair bit smaller then what Alex is!

Judging by most sites recommending one inch or under, I think we will be ok. If not, he gets ANOTHER new cage, lol! This cage spacing will only be .5mm (half a cm) more then his current one, which is near perfect spacing for him, so I think we will be ok.
