Differences between male and female GCCs

Hey guys! I'm getting a baby GCC soon and I really want a YS, but I don't know if I want to risk waiting two weeks for the DNA results to come back. Should I just buy one now? I want a male because I don't want to have to worry about egg binding, but (correct me if I'm wrong) as long as you don't put nest-y material in the cage, the female won't lay eggs? Are there ways to prevent her from laying eggs? Also how accurate are pelvic tests when they are babies?

Are birds born with "chronic egg-layer gene" or do they become chronic egg-layers? If it's something they just are, there's a way to prevent it right? Sorry lol, I have so many questions!

My FCC had a DNA test for male. It is the best way to be sure. My friend has a female FCC and she has real problems with hormonal stimulation. She gets really moody and does lay eggs. Last check up was due to screaming. The doc said she had 2 follicles. If they have 3 or more they can get a series of injections called lupron to help lower harmonies and prevent egg laying. If you reallly want a male bird I suggest you have the breeder do a DNA test which you should pay for. Should be about $25 or so.

Thanks! What do the follicles do? I think I'll wait to get a male bird - less to worry about . The breeder actually paid for the DNA tests and she is only asking $200 per bird!

The follicles produce eggs. The follicles are producted by the ovaries. Same in humans also. I paid a total of $125 for bird and test. They are all different prices.

I let my bird pick me and she turned out to be a she after I brought her home. I figure I'll take that bridge when it gets here and if it gets here. I love her nonetheless and I wouldn't change her for the world
Personally I'd prefer a bird to pick me than I pick it based on my biased opinion. I know that because I have Lucy, she will always be well taken care of. If I didn't take her because she was a she, she may have ended up with someone that wouldn't know what to do or even care enough to take her to a vet if something like that happened!

It's all in personal preference there's no real difference other than one lays eggs and the other doesn't. Ultimately it's up to you, but just make sure you let the bird pick you! I didn't want a black cap originally, I wanted a pineapple. None of the Pineapple babies were quite as loving as Lucy and she followed me everywhere around the store so that's how I ended up with my lovely little black cap <3

I let Maxx pick me also, I had a choice of 3 normal GCC's and 4 Yellow sides. Maxx came to me, and never wanted to leave. I played with him for at least an hour in the store, walking around, picking out toys, once home we continued playing. He has never once failed to step-up, in or out of his cage, and has yet to bite me. He nipped a bit at first , but I have pretty much gotten him over that also.

I wouldn't have mattered to me if Maxx was a boy or girl, he was the one.

Ohh haha we have yet to learn about that in biology class! And wow you really got a deal. Where I live, normal gccs are about $150 ish, other mutations can go up to $250. Very rarely have I seen them higher, but the majority is still about $250. Everything is overpriced here . That is why I wish I lived in Ohio lol!

Awww!!!! I think black caps are beautiful!! Lucy sounds like such a sweetie . The thing with this breeder is that she is far away and we are planning to meet somewhere in between. Plus she said that someone else wanted 2 birds, someone else wanted one, and two other people said they would call after the DNA results came back. I don't know if the other people have specific birds on hold (from the picture) or if they just want any baby, but I'm really hoping a certain few will be males ! It's just hard for me to drive all the way there to see all of the babies. Hopefully the baby will like me and bond with me.

Awwwwwwwww Maxx sounds like the perfect birdie! I don't have a nice bird store near me . All we have are Petco and Petsmart. At Petco at least you can pet the birds through cage bars, and the employees will take them out so you can play with them, but they usually only have two conures at a time - a sun and a green cheek. That is so cute with Maxx, it sounds like you two were a perfect match ! I am hoping the lady can bring over all of the babies she has left so I can see which one chooses me.
