Mango - Jenday Conure
My 1 year old Jenday conure Mango has been pulling out his feathers. I took him to the vet and they said he may have sleep deprivation as everyone in my house is awake at all different hours. I switched his room and put him to bed early but he has continued to pull out his feathers. What concerns me is that the feathers he pulls out are growing in and have a black wet 'gook' on the ends. When they dry the ends look matted. Does anyone know if this is normal since the feathers are not yet fully developed or could this be more serious. Thanks.

I have never heard of anything like that. Was the black substance brought to the attention of the vet or did that happen later? I know sleep deprivation can lead to feather destruction but I find it hard to believe that it could cause this black substance your talking about. Is there a second vet opinion you could get?

Agreed a second opinion would be a good idea. There could be a host of reasons like fungal, viral, bacterial or even his environment.

Thank you for your suggestions. The black substance appeared today but I will definitely call the vet tomorrow.

If the black wasn't on the feathers when you took him to the vet i would take him back to the same vet. Your vet will be able to tell you more about it if he sees it. Did he do any blood test when you took him the first time? I have never heard of this either but would love to see some pics and for you to let us know what the vet says about it. I am sure everyone would like to learn so more info as well.

I am hoping it is diet related caused by a deficiency in the diet. Is he fed a balance diet.

Took this bit from the link i posted above

- Pantothenic acid deficiency causes the formation of ragged feathers.

- The appearance of malformed, short, stunted, broken, bent, dirty, stained or unusually colored feather should be considered abnormal. Possible causes are: organopathy, toxins, malnutrition, bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites (blood or intestinal), boredom, anxiety, lack of sleep, psychosis, sexual frustration, hormonal, or molting abnormalities.

Humidity can also be a factor. To high or to low.

I would also add that they are not healthy feathers & are falling out by themselves. Improve his diet, lots of fruit & mainly dark green leafy veggies. Also plenty of showers should also help.

Be sure to take feathers with you to the vet. My computer would not let me see a bigger pic of the feathers so i am not sure what you are dealing with. Pedro Has covered the most common problem that cause damaged, odd feathers. Let us know what the vet says.
