I got my feahter sexing kits in the mail today. I am kinda squeamish about ripping feahters out of my babies. Any hints or ideas?

I felt the same way. When I did mine, I had long acrylic nails, so I used tweezers to make sure I only pulled one feather at a time. Keen didn't LOVE it by any means, but it was really fine. I gave her lots of snuggle time and treats after and she was very forgiving about it. I was REALLY freaking out about doing it, so much that I had the kits in hand for almost a week before using them because I was so scared. It was really not a big deal though.
My best tip - pull one feather at a time and be FIRM about it. A couple "pulls" with Keen I was nervous and being a little too shy about it. Didn't end up pulling the feather out, but just yanking on her feather. That wasn't good - because I caused her discomfort, but didn't even get the feather.
Good Luck!

They test the tissue at the end of the feather so you have to use "fresh plucked" feathers. My birds do not pluck unless molting and you can't use molted feathers....

Mamanda....thank you for the info, but I am still squeamish! LOL

I did quite a few birds some years ago... I just collected as tiny amount of blood from their toes... Little prick and it was done... Not a peep out of any of the birds.

OK, I just bit the bullet and did some yanking, no tears (except from me) Rio is ok now, lots of cuddles and a couple of sunflower seeds) Kai is still really PISSED and keeps biting me although she takes the sunflower seeds from my hand. I think the whole ordeal was way harder on me than it was on them! All that is left to do is drop the feathers in the mail and wait on the results! I am excited to find out if I have boys or girls or one of each!

So exciting! I'm glad it went well. Can't wait to know the results!
