RIP Constantine: Jenday Conure
Con had his first vet visit today :) He did very well going in and out of the carrier for his first time and even did well with the tech that came into the room. But when the vet herself came in oh boy

He refused to step up to her, ran away, and hid in my hair and in my jacket. Once she had him he was really still and fussed when she probed his keel bone then CHOMP! He went after her hand three times and broke the skin on her finger :11: I was shocked at his behavior but not surprised that it was towards the vet.

How about we share some vet stories? :D

Rest in Peace Rio
When I took River to the vet, when the technician came into the room he jumped right onto her! Startled her a bit a think, he just wanted to say hello, you're my new friend. Then when the vet came in, he was climbing all over her hand, trying to take her pen and eat her stethascope. :)

Rosie was checked out by a female avian vet and my bird was so nervous she threw up all over the vet and her staff by flicking it in the air. Poor baby. Then I took her to the now passed Dr. Zantop who is a bird whisperer for sure. Rosie stepped right up on his hand and was so calm. It was wonderful to watch.

Rowdy has always been pretty well behaved at the vet's. The worst we get is sometimes she decides to fly in circles up near the ceiling for a minute or so.

Bri, my BC, was another story altogether though. She would do everything she could to get away. She would have to be wrapped in a towel the entire time and would just scream and scream. Then we'd finally get back to the car and she would say, "Goodnight" and crawl to the back of the carrier. I would have to sing to her to get her to come around. I hated taking her in, both for my stress, but mostly hers. She ranked up there high for my worst behaved animal in a vet's office, lol! Even my goats behaved like perfect angels in the vet's.

At the clinic I work at sometimes it helps of the vet doesn't go in the room in a white coat. It allows the exam to start on a more peaceful note. And the birds sometimes gain a little trust.

Merlin & Charlie (Senegals)
I LOVE taking Merlin to the vets. He's just super sweet with all of them. My Vet absolutely loves Merlin because he's so good natured with pretty much everyone and even after the vet has had him pinned down and splinted up, etc, Merlin still goes and flies onto his shoulder to play with the curls in his hair that he can just about reach. Haha!

Usually the Vet just stands and gives him cuddles, perks of the job I suppose :p

However when Merlin went to the closest 'non avian' vet for a nail trim, he was a bit anxious of her. Then obviously she massacred his precious nails which was a no no! But we gave him a stick for him to chew on (instead of our fingers) and he took to that really well, struggled a bit still but was very very good considering how unhappy he was (and she nicked the quick a few times too!) He's just brilliant at vets, they're often surprised at how good he is :)

Pyro, my new baby sun conure
Pyro seemed to do well at the vet, but he was a very different bird the rest of the day. He acted stressed out from the whole ordeal, which is understandable.

Bitty - CAG (2 yrs old? and working on spoiling her rotten)
I met Bitty for the first time at the vet. Me buying her was contingent on her being in good health.

She was scared to death of me, scared to death of the vet, etc. When the vet tried to grab her, she flew on the floor. He turned the lights off and put a towel on her. From there, she was pretty much at his mercy. Some fussing and what not, but nothing terrible.

She is a lot different now. I am even somewhat looking forward to a vet trip soon, just to see how much more comfortable she will be.

Not a bird story, but still a vet story. We have a 90 pound rottweiler german shepherd mix named Dahmer(hehe ;) ). We have had him since he was five weeks old and I worked at a grooming shop when we got him, so from the time he was a puppy I would take him in, put him on the table, trim and even dremel his nails, all in the hopes that when he grew into the big lumix he is today, that he would be cooperative...nope. I have wrestled giant pit bulls and bernese mountain dogs to cut their nails and even with two other people I can't do his. We took him to the luvmypet clinic last february to get his annual vaccinations done. The two dogs in front of us were these remarkably well behaved labs that sit perfectly at attention while the vet gave them their shots and their nasal sprays. The entire time I was looking at my boyfriend saying, Dahm isn't going to just sit there like that.... And right I was. It took me, my boyfriend, a vet tech and the vet to hold him down. He ended up getting pricked more times than I can count because he kept jumping around as soon as we would get the needle in him. He ended up having to get the injectible version of the nasal spray because we couldn't get him still enough to get the darn thing in his nostril, and the entire time he was screaming so loud you could hear him through the entire place. While trying to hold him still he chomped down on my finger, drawing blood, so I had to get a band aid from the vet who had warned me not to put my hand were I did... After all was said and done, the very nice vet tech was laughing because he thought our dog had peed on his leg in the process, a few minutes later, he came up to me and said, by the way, he didn't pee on me, I forget I had a yogurt cup in my pocket and he just squished it, although that does explain why his "pee" smelled like strawberries lol. He's due again in two months to have it all done again, this time he will be getting a hefty dose of benadryl first ;)
